Following on from a thread in chat I thought I would start this so that we can hold each others' hands through the UCAS process with all its challenges.

Who's with me?

Have been v ill in hosp, but just wanting to say well done on all the great grades, especially pleased the history sources paper went well mrs woodentop Good luck to those still awaiting offers. Really feel for you. Just hang on in there cooking the dinners and keeping the faith, you know: its all you can do. yellowtip your DS seems to have done really well in Chemistry. Good luck to your DD for her law prelims. !

goinggetstough · 11/03/2012 08:47

funnyperson hope you are feeling better now?

mrswoodentop · 11/03/2012 09:26

funnyperson so sorry to hear you've been I'll I hope you are recovering ,I had thought that you had been quiet recently, hopefully you are home and resting.Very best wishes for your recovery.

Ds very pleased with the resit result ,we got him some specialist tutoring which made all the difference.I do think that his school teacher who on other papers is very good needs to look at how he teaches this paper ,the tutor focused hugely on the method of answering the questions whereas the school are very into facts. The tutors advice was that you can do very well that way but it's very hard to get the marks needed for the higher grades .Interestingly the only person who managed to get an A on the school approach was one of those v high achieving girls, some really able pupils were getting D's and E's I hope they take note.

ellisbell · 11/03/2012 10:04

sorry you've been so ill, funnyperson, hope you're fully recovered now.

interesting, mrswoodentop. I get the impression that exams now are more rigid now than they were when I sat them. My children have told me they have to get the right words into their answers sometimes, makes me wonder if they are marked by computer rather than people.

mrswoodentop · 11/03/2012 10:51

This particular exam does seem very formulaic, the aim I think is very good but the way the marking has developed has meant that the original aim has been lost.

ucasfracas · 11/03/2012 11:51

Hope you are better, Funnyperson.

adamschic · 11/03/2012 12:14

Mine got a U in a source paper so resat it but only managed a C. History teacher wants her to sit it again. I wonder if it's worth it.

webwiz · 11/03/2012 13:08

adamschic DD2's friend had several attempts at a history source paper. She got a D the first time, then an E and her final attempt was an A. She got an A* overall and is studying History at university now. Her other papers were fine but she just couldn't get the technique right and was using too much of her own knowledge rather than sticking to the sources.

Maybe a targeted approach on the exam technique would help. DD2's history teacher was a bit rubbish so she needed a bit of extra guidance. I went through the examiners report with her for the source paper and that helped to clarify exactly what they were looking for and I think we found some online history revision guides that specifically looked at using sources.

adamschic · 11/03/2012 13:34

Thanks, we realised it was the technique that needed working on. It carn't harm to resit it.

mrswoodentop · 11/03/2012 14:06

Well it depends on her target grade I suppose, the marking scheme does seem odd though. One person at school with ds originally had a B went for a remark and ended up with a D Sad and has just resat and got a A ,very peculiar

funnyperson · 11/03/2012 14:41

Thanks for the get well soon messages, oddly it all helps.Smile

Yellowtip · 17/03/2012 22:18

Yes, hope you're fine now funnyperson. Thanks for the good luck, all over now (just). Do hope your DD's were ok and do her justice. I studiously avoided DD3 over the past few days but she phoned after they were over and she did at least turn up to all three exams and after the last one was met by DD1 and DD2 who threw stuff all over her and wrecked her make up after which she went off very soaked and tatty to have drinks with her tutors along with the other first year Lawyers which all sounds very civil. They'll be home tomorrow, worn out I think.

DS has just had an Imperial interview but didn't get asked the book question - and no academic questions at all, which really surprised me. Is that normal? These interviews for medicine seem to vary wildly. I'm honestly amazed.

adamschic · 18/03/2012 14:37

Funnyperson, hope you are feeling better.

DD is still waiting for news. They will finish all interviews this week so will know who has made it. We have found out that someone who was interviewed on her day has already been rejected so she is very close but could still get a no. We need to know as the outcome could save us a fortune in travel expenses for another interview. Sad

goinggetstough · 19/03/2012 08:23

adamschic hope your DD hears soon.

adamschic · 23/03/2012 11:55

Hello, is anyone still here? It's all over for us. DD got her dream offer, yesterday Grin. She has decided to withdraw from an invitation to interview for her 2nd choice and is still waiting to hear about the 3rd choice.

I never knew it was going to be so stressful and am so relieved.

So glad I found this thread.

Have sent a couple of PM's.

goinggetstough · 23/03/2012 12:58

Great news. Well done to your DD.

Yellowtip · 23/03/2012 14:32

adamschic THAT IS ABSOLUTELY FANBLOODYTASTIC. I'm really, really pleased and so glad she decided to be bold :)

Well done adamschic DD; enjoy your course and life :)

mrswoodentop · 23/03/2012 14:39

Brilliant brilliant, she must be so thrilled. Its not the one we had in common is it?

ellisbell · 23/03/2012 17:29

well done adamschic'c dd. Onwards and upwards :)

adamschic · 23/03/2012 22:08

Thanks for replies.

Mrs W, an offer was received from our mutual choice but it wasn't what she really wanted, so she is going down south, if she comes home with a southern accent I will put her in her place :)

How is it going for your DS?

crazynanna · 23/03/2012 22:14

Can I jump in? Smile

I am not so clued up about this Uni lark, but my dd1 is 26,married with 3 dcs',had a crap childhood (long story)...left school with hardly anything.

She did an Access course...and has had offers for her 3 choices Grin so so proud.

She is doing International Studies...has turned now (is it?) Queen mary's as don't do the right course...so she's weighing up between SOAS and Goldsmiths.

I knew the brains were in this family somewhere! Wink

adamschic · 23/03/2012 22:20

Crazynana, I don't know much about it and have had lots of help on this thread, but it's looking good for your DD, perserverance is important for students that have to push a bit harder, which sounds like your DD has already overcome. Good on her :)

crazynanna · 23/03/2012 22:24

Smile thank you

unitarian · 24/03/2012 01:22

Well I turn my back for 5 mins and your DCs are getting offers all over the place.
adamschic I'm so glad your DD didn't give up on her dream.
yellow I think I said somewhere that the Imperial med interviews are less formal than most but it is a very rigourous course. They like to know the candidate has the ability to blow off steam socially, I think, and assume that the academic ability is already proven in the candidates called to interview.

I'm expecting DD home today. It would be nice to be told what train she's on!
