Following on from a thread in chat I thought I would start this so that we can hold each others' hands through the UCAS process with all its challenges.

Who's with me?

mycat DD has several friends who are currently on music courses at uni or conservatoire. Can you be more specific? It's a wide field!

About 2 years ago I had a conversation with someone extremely well connected with orchestral musicians and students. He told me that most of the students currently studying music will never get to play their instruments professionally, such is the competition. I forget the percentage figure he quoted but it was depressingly high.

mycatsaysach · 03/02/2012 13:06

hi thanks for reply

he told me yesterday - duh - that he had got an offer for the interviewed place.hooray!

he is not playing an instrument per se - his music courses are more commercial - sound production, engineering and digital music (his fave option so far)

unitarian · 04/02/2012 11:50

mycat Congratulations on the offer.
I gather that has become a popular choice since the introduction of Music Tech A-level so he's well placed if he's got three offers.
I hear that Leeds has a good course.

mycatsaysach · 04/02/2012 13:21

thanks unitarian Grin pressure off for a while at least

mrswoodentop · 08/02/2012 13:58

Interview this afternoon, have had to hold off posting because the stress of the lead up has been horrendous, can't believe how stressed he has been about one interview especially as he already has 4 offers .Dh has taken him partly because he needs a calming influence and although I know he wanted me to go we are so close that I know we risk ending up shouting at each other .Plus to be honest the weather is ghastly and its a four hour drive .

Just wish he could enjoy it,I think he would be perfect for this course but who knows

eatyourveg · 09/02/2012 07:41

Hope all goes well mrswoodentop

goinggetstough · 09/02/2012 08:35

Hope the interview went well mrs woodentop.

mrswoodentop · 09/02/2012 08:51

Thank you ,seems to have gone OK and he quite enjoyed Italy Pugh inevitably there is a certain amount of thinking about what you could have said etc..There are only 15 places though and 45 being interviewed so he is not especially optimistic but not down about his performance either IYSWIM.
They did however give him an offer for the standard 3year course on the spot so that was good news.Smile

mrswoodentop · 09/02/2012 08:53

Stupid phone meant to say he quite enjoyed it,although inevitablyBlush

northwelshmum · 22/02/2012 16:39

Hi mycat sorry this is a late comment but just noticed your message I also have a DS who has received an offer to do Audio Production at SAE Liverpool thro UCAS, applying was a minefield due in part to not knowing the workings of the application process, and also DS only became interested in applying to uni once he realised he could study his hobby (music production) ie about 4 weeks before the application deadline. I think I need to start reading student funding threads very quickly so I can be up to date with the joys of loan applications before the deadlines loom. Good luck to your DS in his course

mrswoodentop · 23/02/2012 16:46

OMG he got an offer ,he thought the interview went OK and they offered him straight politics on the spot, but he really didn't think he would get an offer for the 4year course .He's a bit shell shocked, now got to decide between straight politics at Sheffield or the 4year course in Leeds Confused

goinggetstough · 23/02/2012 17:31

Congrats to your DS mrswoodentop. It sounds as if everything is easy when they have all their offers, but it isn't is it?
My DS needs to pick his firm and insurance. He has decided, but there is something preventing him actually clicking on his UCAS page to confirm it all. I suppose it makes it all so real to them...

gelatinous · 23/02/2012 21:57

There is something to be said for waiting until after the January results come out in early March before making the final selection goinggetstough. They can give a better insight into the likelyhood of achieving grades and there's no particular reason to commit yourself beforehand usually.

Congrats to your ds MrsWoodentop, best not to rush the decision.

mrswoodentop · 23/02/2012 22:04

Thanks ,yes he has no intention of rushing the decision ,he has a couple of post offer days coming up and the crucial resit result on 8 March

goinggetstough · 23/02/2012 22:30

Gelatinous thats a good point about March results but in his case he doesn't have any vital resits or module results. Although he has 5 offers, after visiting all the departments/universities there are only 2 main contenders and his offer is almost the same for both and he know which one he likes best. His main reason to firm though in the near future is so that he can get his accommodation forms in early as only 60% of freshers get a place in Hall.

eatyourveg · 25/02/2012 14:18

School gave us March 15th as the date for the resit results. I assume all boards are the same. Is it definitely the 8th mrswoodentop? Confused

mrswoodentop · 25/02/2012 16:43

Well that's the date that school
Have given ds and the date they are all focusing on on TSR as well .

Yellowtip · 25/02/2012 19:46

Very impressive mrsw, well done him. Much better to have too many choices than too few. The four year course sounds fab.

DS1 has done some A2 modules and says the results are definitely out on the 8th.

eatyourveg · 25/02/2012 21:21

AQA say 8th too, school mistake then.

ellisbell · 02/03/2012 14:54

wanted to wish good luck to anyone still waiting, especially the potential medical applicants who have had such a long wait.

mrswoodentop · 07/03/2012 18:52

Just wondering if anyone else is feeling nervous about tomorrow.Ds only took one but it could be make or break,I think he is quietly confident but he's not saying anything and I could be quite wrong.

Friends daughter had her final rejection for dentistry today ,great timing Sad

gelatinous · 07/03/2012 20:42

Ds certainly wants to know his - he even tried to persuade a teacher to spill today - apparently one of his friends had success with this ploy but he didn't.

Tomorrow will tell just how much work they need to do for this summer. Good luck to them all!

Can you tell me if it's reasonable to ask for a text or is it the done thing to wait until they come home & tell all?

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 07/03/2012 20:45

Hey mrswoodentop, fingers crossed it's OK. dd seems to think she'll get her coursework mark tomorrow too, she doesn't seem very confident but maybe it's just self-preservation. She's also got a Sociology result due.

goingmadinthecountry · 07/03/2012 22:10

Three of my 4 are getting results tomorrow - y13,11 and 10. The stress levels are quite noticeable......

To top it all the other dd (aged 8) had her first school concert today.

mrswoodentop · 07/03/2012 22:15

Goingmad, don't envy your stress levels over the next few months GrinGood luck to everyone's dc tomorrow
