As opposed to my friend's DD with more than 14 pairs of shoes, let's not even count the boots.
She needed them all.

tallulah · 27/02/2011 17:36

No Grin

DD and DS1 we had a pick-up truck loaded to the gills.

DS2 was a hired transit van.

NurseSunshine · 27/02/2011 17:41

If you want to make a weekend out of it then why not bring just her clothes/make up/personal items and then do a shop once you get there for bedding, plates, laundry basket (pop up one to save space!), clothes horse etc. Wilkos is great for that sort of thing.

maltesers · 27/02/2011 17:55

Trust me , with daughters it the kitchen sink. !
My Ds took minimal, but with DD the car was totally loaded and then every time she came back for a weekend, until this last term she brought a massive suitcase stuffed full. . .the bedroom looked like a bomb had gone off.
Clothes, clothes and more clothes !!!

Goblinchild · 27/02/2011 17:58

One of the lads my DD knowsturned up with very little, but a winning smile and a lovely personality.
He's managing fine.

BikeRunSki · 27/02/2011 18:02

In 1989 my wordly possessions fitted in a Renault 5 easily.

Upon graduating in 1992, we had to borrow a van to get them all back home.

In between it was me, a rucsac and Network Rail.

LessNarkyPuffin · 27/02/2011 18:18

Clothes - you know your DD so you'll know how heavily she packs. Shoes, make up, toiletries, hairdryer/straighteners, duvet, pillows, cushions, throw for bed- as it's also her sofa, towels, Kettle(?), glasses, mugs, crockery and cutlery for one, microwaveable tupperware is handy, tv (theoretically a tv means she'd need a license), laptop, printer, docking station for mp3 player, textbooks if she already had a list (or they can get them there), books, folders, pads and pens...

You can buy her the tea, coffee, sugar, persil/ariel stuff, noodle based snacks, washing up liquid and cleaning wipes - handy to have to wipe around quickly if she wants to have a bath, hand soap if she has a sink in her room etc once you're there!

LoisSanger · 27/02/2011 18:24

When I went to university, there were four of us in a Ford Fiesta. I was in a room that provided sheets and duvet but had enough stuff.

ezzie21 · 27/02/2011 18:27

i started buying all the bogof stuff now and stashing it away for september, some arrive with huge stock piles others just with a packet of custard creams Shock

hire van is your friend

thenightsky · 27/02/2011 18:30

We filled DH's massive Insignia estate car, boot and most of back seat. DS had to squeeze in on top of his pillows even.

DS only took pots and pans - and a wok can be used for most things. His halls provided hoover, iron, ironing board, toaster, microwave, cooker, a shelf in a fridge and one freezer drawer.

Lizcat · 27/02/2011 20:42

The crap essential items expand to fill the avaliable space, 6 years of of experience getting myself to and from University. If you have to travel by train you only take what you carry if Dad is delievering you in a Volvo estate you fill it.
Oh yes and the last year all those veterinary text books actually took a fiesta and volvo estate to finally get me home.

Baffledandbewildered · 27/02/2011 20:53

Our galaxy was filled to the roof and two back seats were taken out so loads of space . We've done this three times with our different children ( they all have loads of junk) and it's always the same !!!!!! I suppose you could buy all the bulky stuff when you arrive ie mega trip to asda for food bedding plates pots ect good luck oh and they seem to come back with even more !!!!!! Lol

SnapFrakkleAndPop · 28/02/2011 03:58

Bookswise I got a lot of mine in advance off eBay/local students selling theirs on graduating etc. It totally depends on the course though as some require more than others, some have significantly better library provision than others etc. And some just have 2 or 3 which are enormous!!!

Ask the Uni if they offer a service for ordering set books in advance otherwise she may be running round Sheffield trying to find the last copy of something. If you know you don't have space to take them with I'd advise preparing carefully.

Yellowstone · 28/02/2011 21:29

Completely right about expanding to fill the space. My eldest two girls are keen on their clothes, make-up etc. but still don't need a whole car boot each. They go to the same university and one little car fits all - and them. Their sister is joining them next year and she can take what'll fit. If they take too much it's grim when they bring it all back....

Copper · 01/03/2011 08:52

We don't have a car either. 2 suitcases worth, and buy big stuff up there (duvet, cooking equipment etc). They (and you) get to know a bit more of their local environment, and it gives you something to do other than start to feel sad. Had not to start squirreling away stuff for them in advance though. And bring one of the suitcases back if they don't have anywhere to keep it

My DD1 started at Sheffield uni last September. She is in halls (Ranmoor village) and toaster, kettle, microwaves are all provided so don't worry about buying them. Also mattress cover, rubbish bins in bedroom and wetroom, toilet brush (stuff they don't tell you about!) WRT the the Facebook group, once she knew which flat she was in, she searched for the Ranmoor community group and left a message asking who else was in the flat, and her flatmates all replied.

My DH and I took her, the (estate) car was really full. God knows how it's all going to come back, she has collected so much more stuff. You can buy 'bedding packs' on Into Weekend (the weekend when they are all scheduled to arrive) with duvet etc so that might save some space.

DD got most of her books from Amazon, some 2nd-hand, once she got to uni. The libraries are well-stocked I hear so she may not even need to buy books at all.

I'd have thought if it's just you and her it would all fit... DD could've taken less really but like someone else said, they expand to fit the space available!
DD loves Sheffield, I hope yours has a great time too!

sparklyblack · 04/03/2011 19:22

Sorry that should say Intro Weekend.

exoticfruits · 04/03/2011 19:25

We got it all in + our whole family of 5.

PandaG · 04/03/2011 19:32

depends what she is studying - I read Eng LIt at Sheff uni, and had to buy all my books as nowhere near enough to go round, as everyone wanted them at the same time, and also needed to read ahead.

If she does happen to be reading Eng Lit I may be able to help...still in Sheffield!

I was in halls for first year, then ws only 1 kettle between about 20 in the communal small kitchen on each floor, so I had own, plus mugs, tea caddy, biscuit barrel etc. Duvet was provided, but only clean cover twice a term , so I took spares.

Thnigs like sleeping bag a must, when staying over with a mate or going away for a weekend, airer useful.

I had to pack up my entire room and take it home at both CHristmas ans Easter when in halls, as all rooms were rented out for conferences - don't have thge same problem in a shared house

My dad always took me backwards and forwards in a large estate, but my DH made it backwards and forwards in the train with a bike and all his worldly goods - he did have some storage in college in gthe holodays though.

brimfull · 04/03/2011 19:44

thanks for the recent replies
she's doing economics and french
sparklyblack-when you say about toilet brush etc ,do you mean they are supplied or not?

OP posts:
sparklyblack · 04/03/2011 19:54

Yes they supply that stuff. Brand new shower curtain too, I was impressed! Grin

brimfull · 04/03/2011 19:58

thanks
dd has her heart set on endcliffe so assume similar in what they supply

OP posts:
sparklyblack · 04/03/2011 20:05

Probably similar.

A word of caution though... DD applied to Endcliffe and didn't get in. Everybody she knows in Ranmoor applied to Endcliffe and was rejected. It's very popular but unfortunately that means lots of people don't get in. DD has learnt to love where she is though, apparently Endcliffe is only a 5 min walk away to go and see friends etc. I think she and her friends and flatmates like to think of it as being more exclusive! Plus it only opened last year so is lovely and new.

brimfull · 04/03/2011 20:13

oh interesting
she's hoping that as she's applying early (on gap yr atm) she may have a good chance
