SnapFrakkleAndPop · 27/02/2011 12:01

How big's the family? And how much will she buy before she goes/take with in terms of text books etc?

I completely filled the boot of our Espace. Remember that there's bulky stuff like pillows, duvet etc to consider and I took a lot of clothes too!

brimfull · 27/02/2011 12:05

4 in family
dh may not be coming though and ds is 8 and small
don't think she's thought about text books yet

OP posts:
senua · 27/02/2011 12:05

Will she be in Halls? Wait until her flat have set up a FB group and consulted each other - no need for them all to buy kettle, toaster, etc, etc.

senua · 27/02/2011 12:07

P.S. They have shops in Sheffield!Grin
You can always buy stuff when you get there because, believe me, Tesco/Asda/Wilkinsons etc will be waiting for them.

brimfull · 27/02/2011 12:09

yes in halls
I was saying to her and her friend that it seemed ridiculous everyone taking a toaster ,kettle pans etc.
SO how does the facebook thing work , how do they find out who they'll be living with. She's applying for accomodation soonish(march) as she's on gap yr atm .

OP posts:
brimfull · 27/02/2011 12:10

tbh we were gonna gove her our crap stuff ,plates/cutlery etc and get new for ourselves

OP posts:
potoftea · 27/02/2011 12:11

I'd say no, sorry.
I drove each of my 2 to uni and in both cases the boot was full as was the back seat of the car.
Girls especially have a huge amount to bring; every item of clothes (as they want to be prepared for every eventuality!), shoes, handbags, jewelery, makeup. Then the rest of the stuff like bedlinen, towels, etc.

brimfull · 27/02/2011 12:19

hmm so looks like i may be having to dump ds somewhere and do the drive myself
was hoping to beable to make a weekend of it , dump dd and go off to the peak district

OP posts:
Bearcat · 27/02/2011 16:02

Ggirl.
There won't be any room for your stuff to go off for a weekend in Peak District!
Believe me the car will be full.
Laundry basket, clothes airers, fancy dress outfits for freshers, printer, lap top, iron, ( ironing board for some although not my DS's) bedding etc etc etc.

dotnet · 27/02/2011 16:16

My dd manages with a giant holdall on wheels. We don't have a car - so she has to! She did say her flatmates (in her first year, when she was in Halls) asked how she managed. The answer was - she didn't take ALL her clothes and shoes, only some of them - and wherever a lightweight option was available (eg she has a summer, cotton dressing gown)- that was what she took. She bought some plates and mugs from a charity shop when she arrived. And a duvet from Wilkinson's.

When she comes home in the holidays she changes some of her clothes over for stuff she left behind.

She's now got a friend from our home town at the same university, so might get a lift to and fro sometimes. But if ever she needs to transport more than is physically possible to fit into her giant holdall - I've told her she can always make up a big parcel of the excess stuff, and send it through the post!

Something like a duvet can be given to a friend for safe keeping over the holidays or given to a charity shop if need be.

It's a bit like work expanding to fit the time available... if we had a car, or a van, or a lorry -I'm sure her stuff would expand to fill it.

Goblinchild · 27/02/2011 16:17

Have a practice.
Bedding with duvet and pillows, towels, cooking equipment, crockery cutlery and mugs, cleaning stuff and toiletries, two or three big suitcases for clothes and shoes, several boxes of books, rugs, lamp, iron, hairdryer, straighteners, sleeping bag for mates staying over, enough coathangers, laptop, Wii or PS3, first aid kit.
Pile it in the middle of your living room.
Add anything else she needs.
Look at the mountain and think
'Oooohh. That's what it looks like'
Took my DD to uni last September. believe me, there was nooo space at all for anyone but us too, and my car is a largish hatchback.

Goblinchild · 27/02/2011 16:18

She does nip back and forth on the train, but when summer comes, I'll be helping her pack and move again.

marriednotdead · 27/02/2011 16:20

Unless you hire [[http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.itsahummer.co.uk/Pink-Hummer-Limo-Hire.jpg&imgrefurl=www.itsahummer.co.uk/&usg=__iIahuR1s8gaPg9Z4uVZ8Es4MsHk=&h=531&w=860&sz=94&hl=en&start=13&zoom=1&tbnid=eH2LqYqFUlIqAM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=145&ei=gHlqTZ7LG86xhQeBttjBDQ&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dstretch%2Bhummer%26hl%3Den%26gbv%3D2%26tbs%3Disch:1&itbs=1
something much bigger]] for the weekend, there's no way you will all fit in the car with her stuff.

My car was packed to the roof, and we passed many others en route containing harrassed parent/teenager combos with cricked necks and laps full of crap.

We all looked like carbooters Grin

Lilymaid · 27/02/2011 16:27

You'll need a roof box (and probably a trailer, Grin). And when you pick up the DC and its property at the end of term - because you can't store stuff in many halls of residence during vacations - everything will be lying unpacked on the floor, with a vast tangle of electrical wires, clothing (in need of wash) and shot glasses.

AnnyR · 27/02/2011 16:45

Agree with marriednotdead - it was funny when we took our ds last September. All along the motorway you could see cars packed up high with stuff, obviously on the way to Uni.

We managed to get ds into Uni accommodation where we don't have to empty everything out over Christmas and Easter - so he just brings himself home with a suitcase on the train.

Also the equipment will vary from place to place - for example the kitchen in his house is very well equipped, so he didn't need a kettle. We also gave him our old plates, pans etc in case he lost any of them. Just marked stuff with his initials on the bottom in bright-coloured nail varnish!

He has also managed fine without a printer - so many around the Uni. Of course everywhere is different.

brimfull · 27/02/2011 16:51

FFS might sell the car and get her giant holdall and tell her to get on with it Grin like dotnet's dd

seriously though rugs/printers???

she can print stuff using uni printers surely, she hasn't got wii or anything.
and what are all these books ,won't she get reading list when she gets there. ANd she can start off with one paperback to read and get more there.

OP posts:
Goblinchild · 27/02/2011 16:55

Your daughter doesn't read unless it's work?
We tend to do a Durrell, four trunks of books and a briefcase of clothes. Dd took a bookcasefull's worth of reading material. Including all of Discworld.

brimfull · 27/02/2011 16:58

yes she does read but she won't be taking boxes of books with her
she'll read a book then give it away or keep it
no need to take the ones she's already read to uni
she can replenish from charity shop or swap with friend, whatever

OP posts:
brimfull · 27/02/2011 17:00

your dd took a bookcase full of books Hmm
so did she haul them back and forth on holidays

OP posts:
Tolalola · 27/02/2011 17:02

I arrived at Uni with a backpack.

I left with a truckload of stuff, though Grin.

hidenseek · 27/02/2011 17:07

It's very doable. When I went to university, I fitted all my crap in a Ka, along with two parents and myself of course!

Goblinchild · 27/02/2011 17:09

She's got accommodation until the end of June, so she doesn't need to clear out in the holidays.
Yes, when I went to uni back in 1981 I had a backpack and a holdall and that was it. Grin

AnnyR · 27/02/2011 17:10

If your kids read loads of fiction, then they can join the local public library and borrow it from there (Uni libraries generally don't have big fiction collections, just the stuff for courses). That saves both money and transport!

brimfull · 27/02/2011 17:14

yy she'd def NOT taking boxes of books

OP posts:
Goblinchild · 27/02/2011 17:17

Mine took one small case of clothes and three lots of footwear. It's whatever matters to her that she should take.
