ds has 5 universitys that hes interested in. all at quite a distance.we cant physically go to open days for all of them (all saturdays in october).
i had idea that we could go to a couple during august just to get feel for the city and see campus. would campuses be open during august?

A lot of campuses are open during the summer as they host OU workshops and conferences etc.

some unis have self-guided 'walking tours' that you can follow. Info usually on their website.

Otherwise email the admissions staff for advice. You won't be able to see the uni in its usual mode of work - will either be very quiet or full of random courses, but it will help to get a feel for the layout etc so I would recommend it. Depending on the uni you may not be able to get into the actual buildings, but to be honest, one lecture theatre is pretty much like another.

Make sure you get some info before you go about where likely accommodation would be. Again this should all be on their website.

Maybe, if you name the Uni's, there may be a MNer with child at that Uni that could do a tour?

I know the University I'm at (Russell Group) has tours every week that, as far as I'm aware, anyone can book onto. Try contacting the University, either via the 'main' contact number, or through their Admissions and/or Student Recruitment departments who will know what's available.
