Tripp Trapp vs Babydan

Hi,

I have read various posts on Tripp Trapp and Babydan highchairs. I'm pretty certain I want to purchase one of these but would appreciate clarity on the following;

Am I right in saying that for the TT for add ons I'd need to get the baby set separately & the cushion & tray as well if desired? If so I'd be looking at around £285 per chair.

I think the Babydan chair is c£69 & cushion £30 so say £100 per highchair (not sure if you can get a tray for the Babydan?) I believe the tummy bit that makes it a highchair comes as standard with the Babydan so that's not an extra cost.

I've got twins so double the cost hence why I am leaning towards the Babydan. I would consider second hand but doubt I would get two second hand of the same and don't want to have them different for my twins.

How old are your twins?

For the TT, you will need the babyseat add ons for infants under 24 months definitely. In our testing, we found that the harness alone wasn't enough to stop really wriggly 1-2 year olds from slipping off the seat and they ended up sort of suspended, which if nothing else was frustrating and quite uncomfortable for them!

The TT is designed to be used with a table rather than a tray, so that's not essential. But with weaning, a tray can be a godsend. Especially with twins!

In our product testing, we've found the Cosatto 3Sixti2 to be really impressive. It only lasts until kids are about age 2 or 3, but it's great and does exactly what you need a highchair to do. Some Mumsnetters have reported their kids have been able to rock the highchair (it has a 60s style with a single leg) but we vigorously tested the highchair and weren't able to topple it at all. The bright designs aren't for everyone, but the children and parents in our testing were by far the happiest in this chair!

Not to complicate things further, but we were also really impressed with the Evomove Nomi highchair. It's designed by the same person who designed the Tripp Trapp, and in our opinion, he learned what didn't work with the TT and fixed it with the Nomi. So that might be worth taking a look at as well (though definitely a pricey option!).

However, when all is said and done, you honestly can't fault the £13 IKEA Antilop highchair. If you're looking for a cheaper option given you have double to buy, that is 100% the budget option we would recommend.

We have the TT - my twins are now 6 and still use them every day to eat at the table and for homework. I also use one most days when I work from home.

We bought the chest bar bit and the padding as they were very tiny when we started to wean and resold those bits for quite a bit iirc. We had the trays too which were useful when they small to keep at least some of the mess contained.

285 sounds expensive. I bought two recently from Mamas and Papas for less than that altogether, but obviously without the add ons.

I love the Tripp Traps because we have kids with some sn, and we they have been recommended left right and centre by occupational therapists at every turn. And they are much easier to clean than any chair we've had before, and we've had a few...

My twins are 14 weeks but I'm just trying to plan ahead as I tend to leave things to the last minute & I don't want to panic buy. I suppose I can always get the Ikea ones & see how we get on with those to begin with.

The cosatto one looks good but I suppose I liked the idea of the TT & the Babydan being wooden so they can just be added on to our dining table & be used as two extra seats as the twins grow over the years (trying to justify the cost) vs being an obvious baby highchair used only for a short period of time.

That said one of the reasons I'm hesitant to spend ££ is that my nephews quite happily sat at the table on a normal chair on their knees from a young age so their highchairs weren't used for a long time at all.

I'm either going to go cheap (Ikea) or go all out (TT) & hope I don't regret spending big money on them if I do!

My estimation of c£285 being;

£169 chair
£47 baby add on
£33 cushions
£35 tray

I wouldn't say the tray is a necessity but for sure I'd need the baby add on & think I'd like the cushions for comfort so at least £250 per highchair Albeit I have the TAMBA membership so may get a discount depending on where I buy.

Unsure if the TT would come up on offer/special deal anywhere?

Love the TT. We had the infant add on that was amazing for both children from birth. Great with having dogs and having baby at the table. Now using the tray and the toddler chest bar for the second time round. I know they're expensive but we use them a lot. The tray is great for blw and messy play. We haven't used the cushion much because it just needs washing lots.
Only anecdotal, but both my children are really good eaters and have been at the table with us in the TT from birth.

Hi, no advice on your mentioned ones. But do not get a Mothercare brand highchair. They are a nightmare to use we found. Couldn't wait to get rid (had intended to keep it for our second baby, but I hated it so much we got rid). I wish I'd put my lo in a booster seat ages before we did.

Zzzzz - Initially I had considered the Phil&Ted hanging portable high chairs but my table sides are around 4inches high so I think too thick for the clamps unfort

I can't see what a TT has that the babydan doesn't. We have two BDs and always just used the table no trays which reduced the mess on the floor. Still going strong and Kids are now nearly 8 and 4.

I have the baby Dan. I really like it & it looks as good as the TT though doesn't come in such great colours. I couldn't justify spending over £200 on a high chair. Seemed like a waste of money to me.

You can use an antilop at the table too. We used ours for years. They also pack down smallish as the legs come off so you can take them away with you.

We have two TT that are still in daily use. DD is 10 and DS 7. They are expensive but well worth the money DH and I sit on them too.

I did also have a Fisher Price booster seat with a tray for when travelling which I got after the TT. If I was to do it all again I'd probably just get those esp with twins. They fit on most chairs have a slight hight adjustment and have a removable tray so child can sit at the table as well.

We had TT for all ours, loved them and they convert to chairs as they get older. Overall those go I would say not worth the high price. My friends have an IKEA one that cost about 20 pounds which is quite adequate. TT is a style piece

@penny14 I have just bought the TT online from backinaction.co.uk. I searched everywhere for discounts and this was the best I could find. A TT package for £280 inc chair, baby set, harness, cushion and table tray x

If you can afford it then TT is the way to go imo. We got one for DD for weaning and never looked back. Didn't get the tray as pushed up to the table. She still chooses to sit on it now at age 12+ It's perfect for homework and I find it comfy too. We have a Stokke dining / office chair and recliner Gravity too and find them all posturally brilliant hence why we wanted same for our DD.

Everyone I know with twins has the ikea ones (as do we!).

I wouldn't buy the Ikea chairs, some friends of mine have them and they are always in vacation homes and we alle trip on them all the time! So annoying (and dangerous).

My friend bought two TTs for her twins (different colour but same type) and that looks fine. If your twins are so young now you might consider looking for two second hands. You have some time to find two similar chairs, you can't be the only twin mum with this issue :-)

Tripp Trapp is amazing, we have this high chair from them and it's been a champ so far!

I recently purchased a TT for my daughter and its really great. It s the right height for our table and she is really happy that she gets to sit with us on the table.

Yes- You would have get the add-ons separately unfortunately. We have a Stokke Tripp Trapp and we love it but it is a little pricey but I think worth the money as its excellent for a new born all the way up to adulthood. It is also very robust and sturdy which for me is VERY important, especially if your child will be using it.
