Delivery men stole my things

I admit I am absent minded and easily stressed so it took me a week before I realised a camcorder, a valuable Nikon camera, jewellery and musical box and an ornament had gone missing.
The delivery men were from a well known trusted store. At first they were furious having to lug up furniture to my flat because it wasn't on their papers but after being in my room, changed their attitude. One stood in the doorway of my bedroom, preventing me from entering and I was too intimidated to ask him to move.
I just want to warn other ladies who live alone to have someone there when workmen or delivery men are due. I am devastated as all the footage of my child is lost for ever.
The police say they can't do anything because there are no witnesses so it's now up to the store but I don't hold out much hope. Also, I'm so stupid, I didn't take photos of my possessions or take out insurance because I'm on a low income and didn't think delivery men from a reputable store would steal. I'm so sad, I can't eat or sleep.

I've been relatively ok until now but it's just hit me like a physical blow and I can't stop crying

I am so sorry this happened to you.
One of MIL's carers stole her jewellery. There is nothing we can do as we have no proof.
Some people are so evil.
Did you lose your child?
If so I am so, so sorry.

outputgap · 29/01/2018 17:40

Gosh, that is really really awful. I'm really sorry for you.

The footage was of my son in happier days when he was little. He's abroad and doesn't see me any more and I'm separated from my abusive husband. I suppose that's why I felt I couldn't push past the delivery man. So mad at myself.

It isnt your fault.
They are criminals.
Report it to their employers and contact your home insurance company.

Iwantmypension · 29/01/2018 17:46

I only know 2 people and they're not that available. Lost touch with most friends during my marriage. Thanks, I'll try Victim support. I feel as if I can't breathe

I'm sorry for your MIL. Most of my jewellery was taken last year during a move so I understand how she feels. I don't have insurance as my car insurance was so high moving to a new area, I put it off. I did contact the store but it's my word against theirs. I feel so foolish and naive.

I'm on antidepressants already but unfortunately, they made me fuzzy headed, otherwise I would've been able to deal with the men better. Thanks so much for responding. Tomorrow will be better. It seems as if the universe doesn't want me to have nice things!

I've decided to go cold turkey. Better clear headed and depressed than fuzzy and other side effects, but I'll see her asap, thanks for the advice.

I think you should write to the removal company and the police.
Speak to your MP.
I am so angry on your behalf.
Have you tried to make any contact with your son?

Iwantmypension · 30/01/2018 14:43

I'm still waiting to hear from the store. Am I allowed to name them? The police don't seem interested. I keep remembering other things missing that were in the 3rd box and ringing them but as I don't have evidence, they can't do anything.
Rang Victim Support and made an appointment.
I've also arranged to see my MP in a couple of weeks! Thanks for that advice. I want to bring up more safety advice for people like myself. There's advice for preventing burglaries but not much when they're actually in your home delivering and assembling furniture!

You could email your mp today.
Just google how to contact your mp.

Iwantmypension · 30/01/2018 15:37

Yes, I booked the next appointment at her surgery. She's not available until a couple of weeks as she's mainly in Parliament and she gets booked up. She may not be able to help me but she might promote more awareness.
I remembered I actually did take photos but they were on one of the cameras that were stolen!
I'm grateful for everyone's kind wishes and suggestions as it's really helped me focus. I'm eating again.

Realised there's nothing more I can do apart from seeing GP, arranging to see Victim Support about alarms and meeting with my MP (a first!). And trying not to brood over the lost footage. Sigh.

What about contacting the local paper?

Iwantmypension · 31/01/2018 22:51

i have to avoid publicity because of personal reasons, although I did consider talking to the media. The awful thing is that I've discovered yet more items missing. Thieves are heartless. Just expected this store to do thorough checks on their employees because the way they operated was very professional which suggests they've done this before.

Please get in touch with the police again.

Beeziekn33ze · 04/02/2018 13:06

Contact the store again and keep on until you get a response.

Iwantmypension · 04/02/2018 14:44

They're not interested and have basically said they can't proceed. Haven't even had the promised follow up. I'm just another statistic unfortunately. Suppose they don't have the resources and are tied because they have little to go on. You'd think they'd at least pressure the store because the delivery men work for them! They seemed like professional thieves: the way one blocked the door and kept me engaged, how quick they were, how opportunistic and quick thinking the main man was. They also took the keys to the windows and left them unlocked! What's so horrible is that while they took valuable stuff, a lot looked pristine but was actually old and they wouldn't get much through reselling.

A couple of people will speak on my behalf next week as I have a voice disability. I think the store's head office want to brush it aside but I'm determined to make this known and stop these men from doing it to someone else. The nationwide store has a reputation to maintain so I hope they listen.
