how to motivate my elderly dad

my dad had a very minor stroke last year and has been deteriorating ever since - he can still drive and is physically able to move around, but is lacking any motivation to get up in the morning, wash, look after himself and will sit and watch tv all day.
He eats, snoozes in bed in the day and reads the paper, but will not help my mum around the house at all, even to empty the bin or peel the potatoes, for example.
my mum works 4 days a week, and is finding him very frustrating.
she reminds him to have a bath, or to take his tablets in the morning, for example, and he will not do it, or lie and say he has done it.
I have suggested to my mum she asks the GP for some help/advice.
has anyone experienced anything like this?

he may be depressed or having further mini strokes that are causing a change in his behaviour-may be start or dementia , if it is he would prob have some insight and may then be willing to see the gp to rule it out or get early treatment. good luck hope you get him sorted out soon i know how stuborn parents can be
