My 6 year old son is incredibly sporty and has a natural talent. He plays Tennis (but is coached on his own as no one under 10 can play like him in the club) He plays hockey, he swims in a class that is for 8-9 year olds, and at school they have noticed how naturaly good he is and is consistently above anyone else his age in all the pe and sport they do there. He has just been put on the G&T register. Should I be pushing anyone for more help with him, grants to help with his coaching or local schemes? I really want to help him enjoy his sport as much as possible, and help him fufill his potential as he loves it so much without breaking the bank! Any tips gratefully recieved.

I know football and cricket scouts watch primary school matches round here - I know a few lads who are on the books at county cricket clubs and biggish football clubs - don't know at what age they start to take an interest though - presumably KS2.

More will become available as he gets older. A swimming, athletics, rugby or tennis club will be pleased to help him develop and if he is outstandingly talented, he will eventually get picked up by some sort of national scheme. My children belong to a local athletics club (quite a small one) and there are one or two teenagers there who are starting to compete at national level who are receiving some funding for their coaching programmes.

At 6, having lots of fun and trying different sports might be the best way to go, so that if he does turn out to be exceptional, he'll know which sport is the one he's most likely to succeed in, and which one he loves the most.
