Hi.

Can anyone suggest a book on creative writing for DD1 who is 11 and in yr 6?

She has requested this for Christmas but I don't really know where to start.

The adult ones are probably too advanced I would think but I wonder if the children's ones are maybe too simple. The one I found is aimed at age 9-12 and she is apparently 'talented' in this area.

Can anyone offer advice please?

Not sure there is a book to 'teach' creative writing. (I speak as a literary agent). I honestly think she would be better widening her reading to stimulate her imagination (and appreciation of techniques). If not, I guess she would 'grow into' adult ones although I take a dim view of them myself. Sorry not to be more helpful.

Thanks for the reply.

What you say makes sense. She does read a lot so maybe that's why she's writing well. I'll get her some more proper books instead.

Julia Bell and Paul Whatshisface put together a good one for the UEA creative writing MA - might be worth a look?

Thank you. Had a look and ordered it. I think she'll enjoy it.

Sorry , I don't know where abouts in the country you are, but if you are in the south or south west, then look at this site. My DS has been on 3 or 4 of Colin Macfarlane's courses, and Colin is a fantastic tutor who really inspires the children to create some very beautiful, thought provoking work.

bit late (I only look at this on school snow days!) but have her check out Publishing House Me website (it has a section for art as well as writing by kids 6 and up)

JustGettingByMum - those courses look fab. I wish we had something like that near here. ds1 would love it, I think.
