Is it true schools don't label G&T's until they are 7?

Somebody at school told me this recently & at parents evening we were told she would be level 3 by the time they take SATS & they knew her abilities but would not put her in the top spelling group (of 1 child) until reassessed at Christmas
That child, I know was labelled in the term she turned 7 & is no further ahead in reading etc.
Not bothered at all about the G&T label really, just the harder spellings- what she gets now are pathetic!
She won't be 7 until August which is why I worry.
They also told us that there was no point in giving her the more difficult work now as she will just get bored in year 3 instead

i think part of the problem is that as parents we only tend to see things like spellings, homework, reading and where the kids sit, and we use that info to work out where they may be in the pecking order of the class

those indicators of their work and abillity are just one part of their overall education - the conversations they have, the topic work, how the work in a team/group or on own, on computers/singing etc etc - they do so much that i am very happy for my dd to find some areas of her work easy so she has energy for all the other stuff that might not be so easy

in a waffly way i mean id let it pass and be pleased that your dd finds the work ok and encourage her to excel in new ways too - does she play an instrument or swim after school? something that stretches her in new ways?

ps in our school the spelling tests take 20 min on a friday so it wont be that boring for the op dd

Are we talking about a state school here or private?
