stop it. It's pathetic.

Thanks.

There is objective, external assessment. CATS test done in year 7 in state schools.

alleve · 12/11/2008 11:32

Did someone further down suggest that discussing the G&T topic on a forum isn't worth it as its not going to help the child.

FFS similar to discussing my husband is having a affair isn't going to help the breakdown of that marriage.

OK I'm talking to myself. Think I need a break from mumsnet for a day or two .

singersgirl · 12/11/2008 11:33

Alleve, I agree with you. And I think I do too.

Swedes · 12/11/2008 11:36

Kerry you are gifted and talented at being irrational and rude.

Pawslikepaddington · 12/11/2008 11:42

Well I'm just amazed that a 4 year old child with hands that small can hold a pen or pencil and write their name, or a 7 year old can send an email. Compared to when I was in primary school they would ALL be G&T, as none of us had a clue. I get narky when my friends compare their child to mine and tell me how much better their child is doing at school, but my dd uses 4 and 5 syllable words and explains them to the other children, so they all have their own niche. We should all post in there and then it may become as popular as AIBU, but maybe a little more filled with praise and good stories?

needmorecoffee · 12/11/2008 12:12

we dint have computers back in those days Paws.

Pawslikepaddington · 12/11/2008 12:15

I know, that is why they would be G & T as they would be teaching us! Was that a dead joke? Sorry!

PhantomOfTheChocolateCakeAvena · 12/11/2008 12:49

WOW! You have been busy whilst my pc stopped working! I have read them.

I like the idea of a boasting thread. I would like to congratulate a parent who's child has just ridden their bike without stabelisers (not that this is boasting IYSWIM).

Just my views:
I think the whole G&T label in schools should be scrapped. Before this was introduced by son was given the label of having SEN though as his teacher needed to do extra work for him so it will probably be replaced by something else. If a child is being constantly told they are stupid and worthless then they will grow up to believe that they are stupid and worthless. The same must apply with bright children, if they are constantly told they are G&T, better than the rest, then they will believe this and become so precocious, it's difficult for them to integrate with their peers and into society. This needs discussing no?
Bright children and all other children need adequate support from both home and school in order for them all to thrive. All children, no matter their ability should have the support they need, not just the ends of the spectrum.

Pushy parents need shaking! It's no good for their children to spend all of their time working/studying/playing music etc. They may enjoy it but they are children and should be spending as much time playing and being 'stretched sideways'. There's no excuse for a child thinking they are better than anyone else. It just brings heartache for that child when the teachers get pissed off with them and they have no friends.

I'm sorry - but I'm feeling more ruffled by this than I want to be, or that I thought I ever could be by a "virtual"row". Kerrymum - how is it possibly OK for you to call me vile names ("hyena" and "vulture" for example,) and accuse me of taking the piss out of a group of children, then tell me to 'fuck off" when I ask you to justify your insults? And before anyone thinks I am taking this irrationally personally, Kerrymum actually named me as one of the 'worst"

PhantomOfTheChocolateCakeAvena · 12/11/2008 13:06

Seeker, I do remember one occasion where you were rather rude to me (not ds though) when I asked for advice. There were others aswell. I was out of order with the thread anyway, I was upset with ds's school and needed support. Anyway, this is in the past.
I have not seen anything about you taking the piss out of the children though.

Avenanap.

The names were out of order kerryMum. Sorry. We are all grown ups here, no names. If someone's pissed you off just say it and tell them why. Still love you though!

OP posts:
seeker · 12/11/2008 13:10

Was I, Anvenap? Sorry! But as you said, NOT to your ds. That really is my point - this is a place where adults can debate and disagree.

PhantomOfTheChocolateCakeAvena · 12/11/2008 13:14

Don't worry about it.

BoccaDellaVerita · 12/11/2008 13:34

phantomavena - Fantastic post (and sorry if that sounds condescending). I could have written all of it, apart from the bit about having a son. As you say, all children should receive the support they need to thrive, and for some that may mean stretching sideways, but it should not mean amassing more and more 'achievements' to give their parents a vicarious thrill. I'm less sure whether the whole g&t thing should be scrapped, as I think that some very able children do get 'parked' in some schools while the schools focus on children with more obvious difficulties, but I certainly think there's scope for improving it. That's why I'm genuinely disappointed that kerrymum didn't answer my question about how things are done in Ireland - we could have learnt something useful from another country's approach.

seeker - yes, kerrymum was extremely rude and chose name-calling instead of any reasoned discussion of some very valid questions. I hope phantomavena's advice will be heeded.

Threadworrm · 12/11/2008 14:05

Seeker: I'm sorry you are upset. I don't for a minute believe that you have said anything on any thread that would justify those remarks.

Ohh KerryMum. There's no witch hunt here.

OP posts:
BoccaDellaVerita · 12/11/2008 15:03

The whole point, kerrymum, is that there is no evidence whatsoever to back up your assertions about witch hunts, gifted children being ridiculed and so on. Until such time as you present that evidence, it will seem as if you are using emotional blackmail to prevent any sort of discussion.

I'm tootling back to gardening, now.

SixSpotBonfire · 12/11/2008 15:23

tortoiseshell - I am liking your posts on this thread ,

seeker · 12/11/2008 15:25

Kerrymum - just tell me what I said that you objected to so much. Give me a chance to apologize if necessary. Cut and paste one of my offensive piss takes. Quote it from memory if you like. Just bloody well EXPLAIN yourself! 5f you scatter gun insults you will be challenged - that's not a witch hunt, it's adult discussion and debate.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 12/11/2008 16:36

Seeker, you are wasting your time You have been perfectly reasonable. As has Avenanap.

I've seen this before though. Runs out attacking people unfairly and when called on it, backs into a corning shouting "bullies, bullies" and acts the wounded one.

She'll not show you where you've been insulting, because she cannot. She'll not apologise because she cannot see past her own nose in order to do so. She'll keep re-appearing on the thread with her bizarre rambling and shouting and say she's not coming back again.

Some people just love the attention - whatever attention it is. What can I say?

In fact, I'm not entirely sure why MN tolerates this. Hey ho.

Greensleeves · 12/11/2008 16:39

QV you are making me guffaw here

lijaco · 12/11/2008 18:10

kerrymum you and a lot of others who post on here are actually the ones who make all the nasty personal comments. I can't believe how twisted this has become. I have never attacked anybody with personal comments on here, but I can name but a few who have. Everybody has a right to an opinion e.g. I read my 18 month old can count to 1000 is this topic for real??

Dragonbutter · 12/11/2008 18:17

Seeker, I think everybody is capable of reading this thread and making their own mind up about who is being reasonable.
Please don't worry about it.
The fact is, this thread piggybacked off my thread which was not a pisstake of G&T in any way, so IMO the whole point made by OP and Kerrymum is totally invalid and well worth ignoring.

mabanana · 12/11/2008 18:27

Blimey, when I left everyone was having a laugh. Am giggling about the Inferior Children still... ho hum

Blandmum · 12/11/2008 18:27

We had a school INSET on G and T at the end of last year.

the expert in G and T made several very telling points. the first was that the worst thing that you can do is to tell a child that they are G and T.

they need to have the chance to 'fail' in a secure supportive environment so that they learn the necessary stratagies to deal with find work hard....stick-at-it-ness if you will.

Sideways stretching tends to lead to happier kids than simple acceleration
