stop it. It's pathetic.

Thanks.

Perhaps there should be one g&t thread for serious questions and discussion (no mocking and heckling allowed) and a separate thread: Bragging and Boasting, where people can post details of their children's achievements. It needs some debate whether we are allowed to comment on these other than to offer congratulations and our own regrets that our own offspring are evidently so inferior.

To my mind, the whole g&t thing has coincided with the demise of the round robin Christmas letter. People now flock to Mumsnet to broadcast to someone - anyone - about how exceptional their children are.

littleboo · 11/11/2008 14:14

Fircone what a great idea, the bragging and boasting thread, suprised no one thought of it before

AbbeyA · 11/11/2008 14:18

I don't know about soup -I do know I should stop wasting time at the computer!

The round robin letter will be with us soon and I predict it will have a long thread on Mumsnet where we chortle over the worst (or best depending on your viewpoint!)

I don't know how you separate the serious G&T from the 'precious' parent-but it would be better for all if you could!

BoccaDellaVerita · 11/11/2008 14:19

fircone - your posts have made me snort with laughter. Simon Hoggart and his books have a lot for which to answer.

poppy34 · 11/11/2008 14:22

fircone - pmsl.. we should definitely have that thread Littleboo..although I notice that the worst offender we know stopped sending it to us after dh sent a spoof one back

Piffle · 11/11/2008 14:36

fircone thats actually funny but very sensible!

Swedes · 11/11/2008 14:37

I will continue to use the G & T whenever the fancy takes me. I wasn't taking the piss out of gifted children at all, I was taking the piss out of myself. Feel free to ignore.

The G & T section is not solely for use by parents with children who are part of that silly government G & T programme. It's for outstanding cake decorators too. It can even be for pets.

littleboo · 11/11/2008 14:39

Swedes, I have a very G&T cat .... oh buts thats another story and i musn't boast

AbbeyA · 11/11/2008 15:00

All the boards are public boards-if people post they have to expect all sorts of opinions.

Swedes · 11/11/2008 15:02

Perhaps Mumsnet should set an entrance exam for the G & T topic? But I would be very upset if Labradors were excluded from being allowed to sit the exam.

BoccaDellaVerita · 11/11/2008 15:03

Abbeya - absolutely. Although there is often an undercurrent of "get off my thread or I'll chase you with my pitchork".

mabanana · 11/11/2008 15:05

I think you mean: 'Get ORF my thread'

TheNewsMonger · 11/11/2008 15:06

My child asks questions all the time. She's not gifted. She's 6. That's what they DO. DURR!

It's the parents of gin and tonic children who invite piss-taking with their silly threads who make me chuckle. Slightly, but only a bit. Cos it's not that funny really.

BoccaDellaVerita · 11/11/2008 15:07

Yes, I think I do. And I also mean pitchfork.

I was g&t, the cleverest girl in the class blah blah, but I've never got the hang of typing.

AbbeyA · 11/11/2008 15:08

G & T is not the only one. I won't name any, but some are supposed to be a self congratulatory thing from like minded people! I don't think that is a healthy attitude-it is good to throw an alternative view among them. I have actually learned a few things and changed my mind on the odd occasion.

Mercy · 11/11/2008 15:08

I love the idea of a B&B topic!

Swedes · 11/11/2008 15:25

S&M might be popular too. Or perhaps a G&T S&M topic? Or might that be too narrow?

Swedes · 11/11/2008 15:28

Perhaps G&T B&B owners who are into S&M, shop at H&M and whose investments have an S&P rating that is only one level above junk?

BoccaDellaVerita · 11/11/2008 16:03

... and whose wallpaper comes from B&Q ...

Swedes · 11/11/2008 16:18

Bocca

I am thinking of requesting a 'Beautiful and Ostracised' topic. For those with execeptionally physically perfect children who are bullied and cut off from thier peers due to thier difference from the norm.

It can a real problem.

I was bullied myself for my own utter gorgeousness.

Greensleeves · 11/11/2008 18:03

can we have a "I just can't seem to put weight on no matter how many buns I snarf" section too?

mabanana · 11/11/2008 18:07

What about kids bullied for being just too wealthy? I mean, not just from families with an above average income, but very serious rich? Who cares about them eh?
