What do they do differently with G and t kids in year 1?

mine was sat on a table with other g and t kids and they had a bit more work - seemed fine to me

yep - just a different group usually, ours are grouped by ability anyway. DS1 and a girl from the other class go 'up' to yr 2 for a couple of sessions a week to work with the g&t yr 2s for numeracy, but the rest of it is just differentiated by the class teacher as normal.

i think it is enough - i dont think they should feel too different anyway, and they still get tired, so more challenging work is probably more than enough

I have just been told my dd2 is g&t. I trained as a teacher myself so I had already worked it out. However, I think gifted and talented is a misleading title really. It is basically the more able children in each year group. Very few children are actually gifted. They do not really get a lot of extra help at her school . You would receive lots more help if you had special needs, for example. However, g&t children are picked to go on special day courses with g&t children from other local schools. It is very low key as the school is concerned that parents make a fuss if they feel their child is more able and has not been included.

My DCs go to indie school so I didn't realise it was an 'official' term. I thought it meant child prodigies.

Gifted and Talented is a relatively new term used by the government to identify the top ability children in each year group. For obvious reasons it is a misleading title. It really means a higher ability child. Unless of course your child is 'talented' in the tradional sense of the word, at at a particular sport or musical instrument or is indeed a child genius!!

Thinking about it I have no idea if other private schools do G and T but we don't so I'd never come across it except here where I hadn't realised it was a proper term.

Laughing at myself now litchick, thought indie schools were some new revolutionary educational facility I had not heard of. Perhaps, I need to get out more!!

Ds1 and two others have a special maths lesson once a week with a different teacher and are given extension homework.

The school is much more on the ball about challenging able children after it lost several to local prep schools.

That is interesting weblette. Our school is a good school but not as hot as it could be in providing for more able children. We have lost a few more able children recently to both other state schools and independent schools. I would move dd2 if I thought it was necessary.

Our school compiled gifted and talented register but then does nothing to ensure children on it are given anything different to do. What is point?

dd2 is g and t

she has no giftedness whatsoever and tbh isnt obviously talented at anything (unless arranging complex worlds in her bedroom, populated by Polly Pocket is anything to go by)

In her case, its that her and another girl are working independently in advance of the other children in reception. She currently has most lessons with the year one children (its a mixed class). Next year, when in year one, she will either be encouraged by the form teacher to go a little bit further, ie, write a bit more, read harder books, or work with the year 2s. Or, she will settle down, everyone else will catch up, and she will mosey along with everyone else.

pagwatch..I felt OP was after some kind of admiration too. G&T at year 1. Oh come on...kids mature at different ages you cannot spot them that early...sigh!
