how do I find out if it is true?

Hi,
My son's classroom assistant told me yesterday that she thought my 4 year old son is a genius! I'm not meaning to sound like I'm boasting but obviously very pleased. He has not previously been to nursery and is the youngest in the year but apparently caught up and is the top of the year in reading and writing.

His teacher also said she thought he was very bright but not the same as the classroom assistant!

I don't do homework with him, unlike all the other parents (he's at a private school - long story, he didn't get into any of our choices and I'm hoping to move him to a good state school if/when a place comes up) as I don't think it is necessary at 4!

My question is, should I pursue the comment by his teacher?

no, I think if they want to take it further, they would discuss it with you

I use this word as a compliment /well done/fab stuff/ you're a genius / etc etc to my students and would be surprised if a parent approached me about it (although I teach at a SEN school so prob not....)

And although not wanting to disappoint it sounds like a TA who was probably conveying her enthusiasm rather than an official diagnosis!

Tania - have they put him on the official G&T list? I think the TA was probably being a little over-enthusiastic in her compliments, and the teacher was trying to play it down a little! But how lovely to have such a nice comment about your child .

he'll find life easier

he's 4 .. concentrate on him socialising and you trying to get rid of that small competitive element we all get when people compliment our children.. it's not attractive in anyone

I don't think it is possible to make such generalisations at 4 based purely on reading and writing skills. They tend to even out more by end of KS1. If he is , he still will be later on and there is plenty of time to pursue it then.

May be it's not a very academic private school and he's just better than a lot of other not so clever children..... or may be it was academically selective at 4+ with lots of competition for places and he's better than the best..... What do you mean by not do homework with him? If he is set it you make sure he has done it presumably but you don't sit there and virtually write it with him? Same with me.
