My friend at school was classed as G&T, she got into oxford then got kicked out in her second year for non attendance,
Us idiots all managed to graduate just fine.

Seriously, Twig, I agree G&T is a naff name and a badly implemented programme but the principle of recognising the "special needs" at the top end of the spectrum is sound - so what would you call it?

Scotland doesn't have separate Gifted and Talented classifications because we all are.

Actually I think there should be separate regional education sections, because this is totally irrelevant to at least 5 million of the the population of the UK.

What about NI or Wales - do they have G&T?

I think it should be abolished, and posts about more able children made in the relevant education section (i.e. primary or secondary). The whole G&T thing drives me nuts. The idea that 10% (no more, no less) of EVERY school is G&T in English, in maths, in art, in music is loopy. I've been teaching music for 10 years, and have taught maybe 2 or 3 'gifted' children. The rest are 'able', or sometimes just bright. When there isn't a national benchmark, it is a meaningless label - if a child moves schools they may suddenly become G&T or similarly they may suddenly 'not' be G&T any more. So to say 'my child is G&T' is simply to say 'in my school, my child is currently among the top 10%.'

what did he do beety? I know someone who in their Grade 8 exam forgot to sit on the middle of the piano stool, and as they reached the top of their first 4 octave scale, fell of the piano stool and landed with a crash on the floor....

Also, I think often the questions about stretching children in certain areas are of interest to 'non-labelled' children. But there is a bit of a feeling that 'if your child isn't labelled G&T' then you can't post there.
