Did you ever wish they were just normal?

That sounds awful, I know, but sometimes it's just so hard I now understand why there are support groups for parents of gifted children. Ds1 is brilliant but has all the classic personality quirks of G&T and sometimes I just want to scream. He is so intensely sensitive to things and yet at the same time insensitive to others at times (err, mainly ME). I go from being in awe of his intellect to wanting to...well, being rather upset. His brother is soooo much easier and happier.

Aughhhh!

I think your child is normal.

jabberwocky · 13/09/2007 18:35

Hmmm, guess you should see him interact with his peers, then.

Has he been labelled or daignosed in some way?

jabberwocky · 13/09/2007 18:39

What do you mean? As in is he really gifted? Yes, he is.

I just mean that there is surley an enormous rsnge of normal with your dc possibly at one end of it.

ladygrinningsoul · 13/09/2007 19:17

My mother actually said to me, when I was in my teens, that she wished she'd had a normal daughter. That really hurt.

I don't think you really do wish he was normal. But I bet you wish he had a pause button.

pointydog · 13/09/2007 19:30

what's normal?

jabberwocky · 13/09/2007 20:04

A pause button! That's it!!! I knew someone, somewhere would get where I was coming from

twocutedarlings · 13/09/2007 20:40

I know where your coming from JW, my DD is just like this to, Question after Question after Question after Question after Question after Question after. (does this sound familiar) .

Sht where the Bl*dy pause button lol

seeker · 13/09/2007 20:46

My dcs are neither gifted nor talented - but they still ask a lot of questions and they still exhaust me and they still need proper answers and they still lack a pause button. Can't see how it's any different, actually. Maybe parents need a support group......

jabberwocky · 13/09/2007 21:56

twocute, IIRC I think I posted on a thread of yours not too long ago? About really sensitive kids?

Oh jabs yes.

dd famously started a stream with me, lasting about one hour, 75 questions or so, starting with "How do lobsters talk to each other?" and ending with "Why don't rabbits wear crash helmets?"

Prehaps with the questions you need to turn it back to them and ask them what they think and why? It will develop their thinking skills.

To be honest most children ask incessant questions. If they didn't then they will would have major special needs.

I just watched "Born to be different". Its a bit like Child of Our Time except that it follows the lives of 6 children with major special needs. Their parents really have it hard.

oh the voice of reason and innocence!! IT's like being in 'nam!!

pointydog · 13/09/2007 22:29

incessant questions aren't unusual

haychee · 13/09/2007 22:30

I wish i had a pause button for my non g&t 2dds! They NEVER stop, and whats worse they talk over eachother, to ask questions about this that and all the others!
Sometimes i get fed up and say fgs just blurt out, stop talking! They arent being naughty or nosey their just learning. But i agree, sometimes its just too much.

tori32 · 13/09/2007 22:46

What makes a child G and T? I think my 20mth old dd may be g and T.

haychee · 13/09/2007 22:48

Hey Pan!

errr, actually I don't think I gave any examples of his giftedness - questions or otherwise. I was just looking for a little support from parents of similar children. There are a number of idiosyncrasies that tend to be specific to them but I didn't particularly feel like listing them, just wanted to vent a bit, really.
