You might like to try this book:

www.amazon.co.uk/Save-Cat-Writes-Novel-Writing-ebook/dp/B078VWDNKT?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

  • really good on structuring novels, and how to draft, edit etc. DS2 has been using this, as well as going to the odd author talk (SF Said was brilliant) and really enjoys just writing at home.

Depends where you are - we are lucky enough to have a couple of book festivals which take place locally, but I think bookshops also advertise events, or you might find things on local events pages, Facebook groups etc. I think just hearing authors talk about how they write helps kids understand the process of improving their work, and feel that others have also had to put in more effort. The author I mentioned above also has some blogs etc (eg www.sfsaid.com/2017/01/three-steps-to-writing.html), so your son could just try searching for favourite authors and looking at any TV programs etc which they have done. The important thing (I think) is to have fun with language and test out ideas.

My son did this. We got to chapter 5 - he dictated and I typed. It involved a lot of crashes and bangs. I did it as well when I was little but mine was more fluffy.

Neither of us are child geniuses though! What's the link to being gifted and talented? There's no evidence of it in our house! (Though my DS is pretty special at maths!).
