How impressed should I be

My friends kid came over for supper. I know him well and know he's bright. Kids were teasing each other and asking each other sums. He asked my boy what 60 x 60 was and immediately knew the answer was 3,600. Maybe it's one he has practiced but I tested him on some similar ones and he knew the answers. How impressive is that for a child just leaving reception?

Very impressive. :)

If he knows 6x6 and knows the principle of adding the correct number of 0s it's not too hard. That said, my (non G&T) kids who are a year older have only just started getting those right and only by thinking hard. I'd be very impressed!

I think the part which impresses me is getting the right number of zeros then converting that (in his head) to three thousand six hundred. My boy is a year older and didn't know the answer.

I think that shows a really strong, secure understanding of numbers - I'd be very impressed.

In old money, that's a level 4 sort of thing so well above his years.
