Enrichment courses

Hi, My Ds came home with a letter from school yesterday saying he had been selected to attened a West Sussex Enrichment day course - designed for the G&T'ed pupil. To be honest this came out of the blue and it has been a bit of a shock for me that the school think of my DS as G&T'ed.

Help I could do with some advice about what if anything this means and what should I be doing to help my DS?

In my opinion, it means they're probably not stretching him enough at school!!

The top ability groups usually get a lot less attention than the struggling children I think, so take any extra stuff for him whenever it's offered!

Oh, and if the school isn't very clued up about G&Ted, they may just be sending this letter out to loads of people, so that you can apply if YOU think your child is G&Ted. They don't want to be accused of not giving everyone the opportunity if there's the chance the parents may feel their child should be involved.

These things are usually meant to be a fun day out for bright kids and gives them a chance to excercise their brains, ask questions, go beyond the National Curriculum, discover an interesting new topic, etc, etc.
I don't think that you or DS need to do any preparation. As pianist says, just enjoy what is being offered -our school never does anything.

Sometimes they are offered courses to go on - but YOU will have to pay for these, not the school. Ask a few more questions and if he is G&T ask what they are also doing a school for him!!!

The courses are great fun, but a lot of hard work. My dd has been on many so if you have any further questions feel free to ask.

How old is your ds? What year at school?

Hi my DS is 6 years old and in year 2 (dob 31-8-00) so only just in year 2 by a matter of hours!
Hence we always viewed him as being behind the rest of his year group - ok not miles behind but given the eldest in his year is 10 months older there is a big gap still.

Step-d went on one of these last year, it was residential for a weekend. She wanted to go, then got really nervous about it, but had a fantastic time. I've never heard her talking so animatedly about anything. We were so pleased we forked out for her to go.
