InCAS tests?

Does anyone know anything about these tests? DS who is 7 has just done them at school and I have his results and his teacher has said they indicate he is 'gifted' but I don't really understand them. What are they marked out of and one of the scores is for 'developed ability' - what is that?

I will ask on Monday but just wondered if anyone on here might know.

I believe that scores between 85 and 115 are normal expectations, then 115 to 130 is above average and 130 and above is exceptional.

The tests I think are only indicative and other tests might be needed to confirm results. DS had a couple of high scores including in developed ability, but not entirely sure what it means either..

I don't know the tests, but I recognise the numbers. If you remember normal distributions and standard deviations from school then that's what these relate to.

100 is the average (the mean) of everyone.

Between 85 and 115 is 1sd from the mean. (So 68% of the population i.e. "normal")
70 and 130 mark the 2sd from the mean points. (So 95.44% of the population lie in this range).
55 and 145 mark the 3sd points. (So 99.72% lie with in this range).

so, if you score:-
55, then 0.14% of all children of the same age will get a lower score than you
70, then 2.28% will get a lower score than you
85, then 15.87% will get a lower score than you
100 then half will be better and half will be worse
115 then only 15.87% will get a higher score than you
130 then only 2.28% will get a higher score than you
145, then only 0.14% will get a higher score than you

Just to confuse it a bit, schools call anyone who gets between 85 and 115 "average". So, parents whose child is in the bottom 1/6th are being told that their child is "average" which i don't think helps get the child the support they need.

and schools say that children who lie in the 115 to 130 range are "above average" which probably makes parents think they are in the top half, when really they are in the top 1/6th!

Thanks for the replies, that makes it much clearer. According to DS teacher 'developed ability' measures their ability to learn and is an indicator of potential, in case that helps anyone else although I can't say I find it very enlightening!

Maybe an analogy is imagine every child in the class has a fishing net and they are all heading out to sea in the same boat to do some fishing.

The children whose nets have smaller holes will probably catch more fish, and do it more easily. The smaller the holes in the nets, the higher the "developed ability".

Personally, I suspect the "developed" bit is meant to apply that everyone can be high ability, its just that some haven't got around to developing theirs yet!
