Do I need to do anything?

Had parents evening and was told DS (year 3)is on some gifted and talented list and is apparently way ahead in literacy.

Google led me here, I didn't even realise there was a whole G&T topic on MN.

So do I need to do anything or just encourage DS as we have always done? The teacher seemed a bit shocked that we didn't know about the list.

Sorry if this seems such a stupid question but I'm most definitely not G&T !

G+T is a special needs list that shows the children in are the top 5% attainment and should be offered additional challenges to keep them interested and improving.

Do what you have always done, and keep an eye out that they are in fact challenging your DS in literacy, as that is what the G+T list is all about.

Some parents see being on the list as some kind of award for brilliance and get competitive about it (ignorantly as it is no such thing). It must be refreshing for the teacher to have to explain it to you!

I was only told my dd (7, also yr 3) was on the list a few months ago, even though she'd been on it for ages. Gifted and talented menas different things in different areas, in England I think it means the child is in the top 10% in a subject? (please correct me if I'm wrong as I'm not in England). But that means the top 10% in their class, so in another class they might not be labelled as G+T. It seems a bit mad to me really. Also a child can be very bright and yet underperform, so the system isn't all that reliable. Anyway, I think you don't need to do anything unless your child seems to be getting frustrated, as hopefully the school will keep her engaged and stretched.

Great thanks for the info, the teachers are bloody brilliant and really get DS so I know DS isn't frustrated. I only wanted to hear all our DC were well behaved so I was a bit shocked about the G&T list. Teacher probably thinks I'm an idiot now.
