Tiny allowable boast here please (!) because I want to tell the world, but can't put it on FB and my family don't care - my no.2 child just passed her grade 8 theory. Only a pass mind but she's just turned 14, so it's not too bad. Hurrah!

Oh that is good! well done mini-pom! Mine wouldn't go near theory after G5, it is so dry and difficult.

I have spent 2 years teaching a lad almost from scratch, and he is doing Grade 5 next term. He's just said he plans to finish the theory grades. I'm going to have to swot up a bit.

On the other hand, I am having my 3rd attempt at the Grade 2 book with DD1. She knows it's her last chance to get on with it before she gets REALLY behind.

Well done 'little' Pom (by 14 mine will both be taller than me and refuse to answer to little).

Now since you are a very clever girl, please tell me how to get my DD1(16) to do her grade 5 theory, so she can do her grade 6 singing!

Well since you asked .... I'll admit that I'm a music teacher. Have you thought about G5 practical musicianship instead of theory? For some it's a better option. I think I can get students through the G5 theory exam syllabus in an intensive weekend, if you fancy a visit! But I'm not UK based....
My youngest student who did this was 8 and passed with 85. Doubt he can remember much of the theory now, but it got him through the exam. Also check out mymusictheory.com. Some great practise exercises on there.

Thanks, I'm a music teacher too, but am impressed with your teaching Grade 5 in a weekend. DD is 8, and I think she can probably get through the Grade 2 book in a couple of weeks. Her flute teacher is doing Practical Musicianship with her, in case it comes together before the theory (in fact, I'll probably make her do both eventually). They are working on Grade 4, and she can easily do some bits (transposition and singing back the melody) but not all of it.

Probably more correct to say I can get them through the G5 exam in a weekend. An awful lot of it is exam technique - so for the 8 year old, he didn't understand cadences but knew to write 5-1 perfect cadence for both answers in the cadence question. One of them is always perfect. He got 5 put of 10 for that, so one was right...

We just found Dd managed to get merit at grade 5 (aged 10). I know nothing about music, so it is all due to a very good teacher. So it's a big thanks from me to all you good teachers out there, music or otherwise.
