DS2 has just been assessed as 2a in reading. He is 5 abd a half abd in foundation.

That's great. brag away hun tho even here some won't like it. My dd is much older at 11 top of the top sets for maths science spanish ict but it all starts with reading she didn't read before she started school but once she did start no stopping her and now has reading age of 16+. I want to shout it from the rooftops but it's very difficult.

Well done your ds2! Our school don't level but my DS is in reception and reading with Y2s. I don't feel like I can tell anyone in real life either. Shame isnt it?

Well done to your DC! It is an utter shame that academic achievement isn't celebrated in our society in the same way as say, sporting prowess or artistic or musical ability.

I learnt pretty quick not to say ANYTHING about my DCs and ability, which is a shame as actually they (and especially DC1), struggled, seriously struggled, at school with school refusal and so on, boredom, had to Change schools to get support, and it would have been nice to have been able to talk about it to people (5yo and tested iq of 160+ does cause problems. Tests done at request of the school btw, I think to "prove" to us DC average and badly behaved not very bright and bored!!!!). The primary school years for each of them, were awful. For example, told more than once not to answer their questions and not to let them read books (I'm not joking). Secondary much better especial in the upper school.

Further brag (which I barely mention in rl, unless asked about it directly!) DS1 currently an Oxbridge student...

Keep encouraging them to learn, to love learning - if that is their particular talent, why should it be any different to encouraging an artistically gifted child to draw and paint, or a talented young footballer to keep practicing?

Well done him, and you are entitled to brag on here as much as you like.

If other people don't like it ignore them, I know its hard when you want to shout it from the roof tops and have nobody or are unable to do so in rl.
Good luck to your little ds and yes, keep encouraging him to learn, especially new and novel subjects.

Iseenodust, sadly I think so many academically gifted kids get turned off learning by their early school experiences but I think there's a lot parents can do - try and get the school to provide different work (broader not pushing them further ahead), and especially to try and get through to you school that "more of the same" if a child is finishing quickly, is boring and off putting (that's what led to school refusal and eventually changing schools in my ds1 case).
Provide the best learning environment you can at home... Buy or borrow any book they want to read, talk about stuff. Encourage tv!!! Yes really, my DC all picked up huge amounts from pre school age on, watching history channel/documentaries! It's a great resource, as is the internet... All the worlds knowledge at your fingertips! With suitable supervision of course.
And keep answering DCs questions .

Hi this my first ever post on mums net so please be gentle..... It is lovely to hear people celebrating there childrens success. But as is mentioned above it is sad that people don't like hearing about academically bright children...if it is music, dance or sport then it's fine. My dd was put on the gifted and talented register in year 3. I told dd not to tell anyone as I knew it was going to cause problems....she used to go to a school with very pushy mums, three of whom have close connections with the school one was an LSA, one a teacher in the school and one a school governor. Somehow they found out about dd and made such a fuss because their children bright but not gifted and talented and therefore not on the register. The parents made dd life a misery that we had to change to a private school. Things are much better as the new school really stretch dd

That's sad... Glad your DD is happier and getting what she needs at her new school

I am in awe of my year 4 ds. His teacher has just told me he is a level 5c for writing and maths and level 5b for reading. I had no idea he was doing so well. He is also a lovely kind loving boy and I am so proud of him.

Dd is in year 7 and she's doing end of year assessments at the moment

Just had an email from her English teacher saying that if her assessment piece had been a GCSE piece she would have got an A* and would I mind if she shared it with her year 10 class

Oh these are really lovely posts to read :). Thank you for setting this thread up - it is hard when you are so proud of your child but can't share your joy with others for fear of bragging :(. My little boy blows me away with his memory and intelligence - he's 6 in January and had been free reading since 3.5, he loves science and geography and knows all the countries, capitals and flags of the world, how the body works, named of most ofsted elements and how they react etc.
He particularly loves the lego movie and knows the film script (with sound effects / accents etc) word perfectly... His party trick is for us to pick a random place in the movie and he'll just start reciting :) :) haven't caught him out yet ! ;)

Of the elements 'not Ofsted' luckily he does not get his brains from me :)
