I keep reading about CAT score but know nothing about them do the school normally tell you what they are or do you have to ask. And what do the scores even mean. My dd is apparently gifted in English maths and science. Ds is a talented sportskid

These have only been shared with us on one occasion (DS1 at the end of Y4). It was one of those standard distribution things, where the mean score is 100. A tiny minority of children would get as low as 61 or as high as 139.

I have no doubt that my children have been scored on other occasions (I know that they were tested in Maths, English & verbal reasoning on the first day of Y7) but we haven't been told the results.

All schools are different. My DCs secondary are the only school locally that test their new intake in July before they start in yr7. The CAT scores are on the schools Go4schools website with all their other data.
The tests are VR, NVR and Quantative reasoning.

My DS Y7 state comp sat CAT test in the first week or two of starting secondary school. They didn't advertise the results, but I asked what his scores were and they let me know. Eventually - they were sent off to be externally marked.

They are basically a kind of IQ test sort of on the lines of the 11+. Verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and ?? maths, I think.

The score helps them with placing kids in sets and predicting targets/grades for end of year and even for GCSE Confused go figure

Not all schools do all the tests DC's school does Maths, English, verbal and non-verbal reasoning they then combine this with PIPs testing to give an idea of the child's ability.
We do have to ask for the scores if we want them. I do. They are not 100% accurate merely give an indication.

I think that one of the things they use them for is setting targets and monitoring progress.
