can I just have a proud post?

had parents evening - DD2 in Reception is doing extremely well, really getting going with her reading now (she is a summer term birthday) and her maths is very good etc plus she is just all roundly lovely to have in the class from what I gather.

DD1 is in Yr1 and her teacher showed us some of her work. A 3 page essay including narrative, speech marks and punctuation correctly, great detail and some amazing efforts at spelling some complex words. Her maths is also extremely good and I had to politely say that she finds the work easy so the teacher is going to find some harder challenges. The teacher commented it is unusual to have a child so good in both maths and english and she was really lovely and approachable. They are also happy for her to take in her own books for reading.

I am obviously proud of my girls but I am also very relieved that they are going to try and challenge DD1 a bit more and were ok with me mentioning it. I was quite worried before I went because I knew I owed it to DD1 to mention it but I wasn't sure how the teacher would take it but it went well.

aww thats lovely, it is nice when you realise the teacher is behind you and you can talk to them

thank you - I feel very relieved now. I know quite a few retired teachers who all say they have never met a child quite like DD1 (apart from my mum who had my sister!) so I am aware I can't be completely deluded about her ability but I also respect teachers and I don't want to be seen as telling them how to do their jobs and I want to give her teacher the opportunity to get to know her. I don't want her taught things ahead of her time, just sideways stretching and challenging so that she has to learn to think and also to make mistakes sometimes but things that still keep her with her peers and won't then pass the problem to next year when she would get bored or we would start problems. her teacher seems excellent (and I know the reception teacher is good already) so I am really happy.

its nice when you feel supported and understood by the teachers isn't it
my girls primary is fantastic like that and have supported us immensely

secondary school not so much but we're working on it Grin

lol - secondary seems such a long way off at the moment. I hope they come round to your way of thinking.

We are lucky in that our secondary school here has a good reputation but we also have grammar schools still so that is always an option when we get there if the girls want to try for it.

It makes such a difference to have supportive staff, you are right.

I just wanted to read your proud moment and everything I've said is true for us but the support has been for other things as well ensuring they don't get bored as they are very bright.

I don't know if mine are classed as gifted either - they are bright but I don't know if they are bright enough to be gifted. The elder one has various problems alongside it with emotional difficulties and some ASD type stuff although not enough to be classed as ASD I don't feel and she is probably dyslexic too but she is also very old in the year which could be skewing her ability compared to others in the class and I am aware of that hence me being not entirely sure quite how bright she is. She is 'different' but is it due to intelligence or just being erm not sure of the word, she sees the world very differently to other people. DD2 is very bright but easier to deal with, probably similar intelligence level but doesn't come across as quite so different.

Well done you DD's. It is so nice when they do well.
I was actually coming to start a similar thread, so if you don't mind I will join yours. My DD is 9 and in year 5. Has just been given a level 6 in both Maths and Science.

wow that is amazing Lonecat - well done to her. Do they have enough lined up for the next couple of years for her then? brilliant the school have been geared up for her to be able to do that.

Glad that your DD is going to be challenged more too - they both sound extremely bright. Must be a relief that they can offer more at school..

That's great periwinkle :) it's a relief isn't it when the teacher really seems to 'get' the child and know what they're capable of/want to stretch them if necessary.
We had a great year with ds in year R, I'm not sure how its going in year 1 yet, will wait for parents eve. I'm hoping he's being catered for in maths, we'll see!
