Thank you MN towers

I know certain other posters are being really immature and silly about this topic

We will get picked on for posting on here

And certain other posters will be not be able to cope with a new topic

Why should it harm them to have this topic???

We are told off if we post in Education

My DS is SEN and GT so has different needs in both camps

For example, he is in top 2% for English in the country with a very high IQ but has dyspraxia and hypermobilty in his joints which means this week his classmates are doing cycling proficiency at school but he is unable to ride a bike well enough to be able to join in. SO he is the only one in his class not able to join in.

SO you guys can PARP and tease me all you like but I don't care.

You can just go and post somewhere else and link to newspaper articles about pushy parents all you like I don't care

.

Why are people being so nasty about this thread?? My DS is bright yes, but I sometimes need advice on how to help him. Its not boasting.

Blandmum · 16/05/2006 06:46

Jimjams, you are right about getting SN to work first. But silly girl that would take money! Sheesh....what do you expect. Smile

PS shall we both get an IEP for typing and spelling?

PPH, and the people being bitchy about this thread would just love your plan Grin

Actualy Jimjams is quite right, the g and t reg is most effective when it is working with kids who otherwise wouldn't get enrichment because of finacial circumstancs. I work with outstanding kids who don't think about going to university because it isn't something that their families have ever done. G and T kids are found in all walks of life. Unless Cod sez they are only the spolied ,middle classes of course Smile

As a mother of bright children I'm all for being able to post on G&T issues without the "playground bullies", but I wonder whether separating out the Education topic is really a good idea. When the fuss has died down, those accusing us of showing off will no doubt go somewhere else and leave us to it. (If they don't, anyone care to join me in liberating the downtrodden from the notorious women's prison "Style"?)

Unfortunately, some other posters who have in the past offered us a different perspective on the issue may not even come here. I'm thinking in particular of those who were bright at school themselves, but whose children are not "G&T". And what of those who are concerned about their child's odd behaviour in nursery but might not have considered the possibility their child might be bright? (I do worry that whether a child is classified as G&T or as having behavioural problems may be influenced by the socioeconomic status of the parents.)

The separation of Education into sub-issues isn't just a G&T concern - if those whose children are all at secondary school never visit the Primary topic area, again, a useful perspective will be lost.

fattiemumma · 19/05/2006 00:10

maybe it speaks volums about my own and my siblings education (ds is SN so wouldnt qualify at the mo) but i have never realised tehre was sucha thing as a G&T register ( other than that held by my aunt down the local pub of course)

what a great idea. it is all too often that we concentrate on helping those children who are falling behind (rightly so of course) and we tend to forget about those who are doing well.

I hope to join you ladies n here one day....though i guess it is more likely with DD than DS but hey one at each end of the spectrum's not too bad lol

Cam · 19/05/2006 12:19

I'm not known for making personal comments on mumsnet but I do find all of Cod's immature interjections on this topic highly irritating.

clerkKent · 19/05/2006 12:51

I agree cam.

Enid · 19/05/2006 12:56

think robinpud's post is absolutely spot on

Cam · 19/05/2006 13:06

robinpud's post is not one that can be disagreed with in itself.

However, it's not what this topic is about.

robinpud could equally put her post on the SN topics but somehow I don't think it would go down too well.

Maybe I should start a new thread in G & T:
Are magistrates arsier than parents of G & T children?

The problem with cod's posts here is that she kids herself that she's attacking the parents but really she's attacking their children.

Cod has definitely got a problem about herself.

Enid · 19/05/2006 13:07

I think that depends whether you think Gand t is a special need

I personally do not

Piffle · 19/05/2006 13:09

It is true that primary school class sizes and lack of resources mean that all kids are starved of time, but teaching is good enough for all in the class in theory. some kids struggle with some aspects and need more support, which thus diverts resources and time away from children who are "getting it" ok, or some who are way ahead of getting it and get bored and disrupt the whole class. Vicious circle.
Any parent can argue that any child given more time and resources will improve a lot.

In mitigation though, you get what you're given birthwise right? Every parent wants the best resources and time diverted to their child.
I'm just the same as any other mum, my child has educational needs the same as anyone elses.
My dd is due to be statemented for SEN for school entry in 2007. I have had to fight for this, does this make me a pushy parent the other way? Wasting yet more of the precious LEA resources to ensure my child can get the best out of her education? As she has a significant sight impairment, you would all most likely say this is a fair use of resources right?
So then asking the same for my ds, that his needs be catered for is exactly the same IMO

It (G+T)comes with as many (if not more)drawbacks than it does rewards, most days I do not consider his intellect as a joy but as a right royal pain in the arse to be frank.
We had to move hundreds of miles for the right school, do now works away 5 days a week.
As a parent you do what you need to do.
Simple.

Cam · 19/05/2006 13:10

I do believe there are special educational needs at both ends of the spectrum but I'm not that keen on the label of G & T.

Piffle · 19/05/2006 13:10

Enid I would have said the same thing until I was in the position of having a child with that affliction.

Cam · 19/05/2006 13:12

My post was in response to Enid rather than piffle.

aha she a pychiatrist too

RTKangaMummy · 19/05/2006 13:29

IMHO someone would not understand GT or SN unless they have direct experience with one of their own family.

In a very simplified example:

It is sort of like someone not understanding someone else in a wheelchair and their needs completely ie needing their kitchen counters with a system that can alter the height for wheelchair users and people in family without wheelchairs.

dont be daft we can all empathise

anyway i was g and t Wink

Bugsy2 · 19/05/2006 13:31

cod, if someone else was doing this - you would suggest it was time for them to make a cup of tea or discuss peg bags.
How about it?

SaintGeorge · 19/05/2006 13:38

As I suggested on a thread the other day, I think the subject heading doesn't help.

IMO it would be better if the word Register or Scheme was added after Gifted & Talented.

Also that the Topics should be better defined. This is under Education but only shows as G&T.

Maybe they should be more like Main Topic:Sub Topic:Thread Title.

So 'Education: Gifted and Talented: Thank You MN ...'

Enid · 19/05/2006 13:39

maybe cod feels strongly about it

RTKangaMummy · 19/05/2006 13:51

Yes ok empathise

The title should stay IMHO cos it is the correct title

We were told off when we posted in education even if we put a sub menu

Just ignore us if you don't like it

I don't like style but I just ignore
