Would you ask about NC levels?

Dd was identified as G and T for literacy and numeracy in reception. About half way through year I was told she was working at about 1b so no genuis just better than cohort.
She is just finishing year one and received a great report showing she was working above level expected for age. However, this doesn't really correspond to another sheet received not long ago saying she has just made 1b for writing.
Will I be a bit precious asking?
Also want to ask about dd1 as is also working above but only 3b at end year 3 which also doesn't seem right. (Obv never been G and T)

NC levels are fairly irrelevant, IMO. They are about attainment rather than potential. If you want to find out how gifted your child is, you should be looking at verbal and non-verbal reasoning.

skeggy84 So your DD is finishing year 1 and she was 1b mid-way through? Is she still recognised as G&T now? TBH 1b is average for mid-way through Y1, is it a lower achieving year?

Sorry didn't explain that well. Was 1b halfway though reception but apparently still 1b in year 1.

So no progress in over a year?! Hmm Do you think her reception teacher could have been a bit over-enthusiastic with his/her assessing, or OTOH the year 1 teacher too strict WRT assessing?

Either way I would be in like a shot to question this complete lack of progress.

I'd speak to the teacher. Whatever the level, no improvement in a year is a concern. Do you think 1b could be a misprint?

letseatgrandma · 16/07/2012 21:20

Is she working above the expected level in reading/S+L but only at/just below the expected level in writing-it could be that?

Or did the reception teacher state she was working at a 1b specifically in writing a year and a half ago?

If it's the latter-then I'd have a chat with the teacher as there's a discrepancy, but if she's just better at reading than writing then that's the same as a lot of children!

I think she is on about 3c for reading .
Think reception teacher said 1b for all areas but maybe she only did a rough assesment as I understand nc levels aren't really used in reception.

So that probably it!

Sounds like it.

3b at the end of y3 is above expected, too :)
