DS1 wears jeans and tshirt every year. We then flick through books till we find a picture of boy in pictures wearing jeans and t shirt. Grin or failing that we say he is Horrid Henry or Perfect Peter Smile

suzikettles · 25/02/2012 17:10

Ds is going as Sam I Am from Green Eggs and Ham.

Red hat, yellow T shirt and a plate with some paper green eggs and ham stuck on it.

WillowFae · 25/02/2012 20:20

Any ideas on how you could dress as Matilda Iamnotminterested? My 4 year old DD has to go as a Roald Dahl character.

WillowFae · 25/02/2012 20:24

cere - my son was told that they can't just go in mufti and claim it is a book character! I was trying to convince him to do that as Charlie Bucket.

curlywurlycremeegg · 25/02/2012 20:25

I am dreading it DD and DS2 want to go as Lucy and Edward from Narnia, I am barely able to use a sewing machine.................

festi · 25/02/2012 20:27

Willowface. matilda needs a red ribbon in her hair, pretty dress and cardigan. Or jeans sneakers pretty blouse and cardigan, but the red ribbon would be a must.

Thanks festi. I was thinking about standard grey school pinafore as that is totally different from their usual uniform and Matilda seems to spend a lot of time in school! Would a regular pretty dress be more appropriate?

festi · 25/02/2012 20:56

Im not sure, your idea sounds good too. In the film she does not wear uniform but the scetches in the book I think she does she does, so I think your idea is probably better. Ill have a look in the book in a min and let you know.

cece · 25/02/2012 21:02

LOL - well he has done it every year so far and not been told off! He hates dress up days.

Currently trying how to incorporate normal clothes into a Roman Day costume Hmm

Rooble · 25/02/2012 21:10

My ds is going as the bfg: outgrown trousers, sandals, grandad shirt, waistcoat, cardboard ears, carrying a dream bottle and foil trumpet with a Lego "Sophie" in his pocket (if that helps with the roald Dahl one)

Rooble · 25/02/2012 21:11

Oh sorry - derr - just realised yours is a DD and being Matilda. Concentrate rooble.

festi · 25/02/2012 21:13

I would go with the school uniform idea for matilda if I where you actually.

WillowFae · 25/02/2012 21:13

Problem with film festi is that it is set in America where most schools don't have a uniform. The book is set in England (her mum goes to play bingo in Aylesbury every afternoon) where we do.

BeckyBendyLegs · 26/02/2012 14:00

We're doing Where's Wally and the cat in the hat. Last year we did Horrid Henry and Mog the forgetful cat (see the recycling of cat costume going on there?) and the year before Mr Strong (with some old cardboard painted red and made into a sandwich board, and The Tiger that came to tea (another cat costume!).

Iamnotminterested · 26/02/2012 15:25

WillowFae Hmm...Are you in the North-West (ish)?

MonsterBookOfTysons · 26/02/2012 15:28

What about a zoo animal from Dear Zoo?
It is my ds's favourite book and he wants to go as an Elephant.
I am yet to find an elephant costume that is within budget and will deliver in time.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 26/02/2012 15:29

This year we're doing Where's Wally as we had the costume left over from a fancy dress party last yr. (such as it is, a red/white stripy t-shirt and a bobble hat worn with jeans)

Last year DS was the Very Hungry Caterpillar - I made him a tunic out of some green fabric and then we made a cardboard hat together with the caterpillar's face on it.

stupidgirlNo1 · 27/02/2012 10:53

Thanks for all the ideas.I have not read him horrid Henry.I will try caterpillar or other ideas given.
