A month or so ago I was told that my son (8) would be moved up to yr 5 for Maths. I had a phone call today from the yr 5 teacher who said it has become apparent that my son is too advanced in Maths for yr 5 and is recommending that he goes into yr 6 for Maths after Xmas. I guess my question is ... what are the down sides to this, if any?

Just a bit of background: He has been on the G&T reg since yr 1 for Maths .. but I don't feel the school have ever realized before just how good he is at Maths (maybe until now). He has always been top of the class in Maths but because they never asked him or set harder work for him they have never seen his potential iyswim - he is a quiet kid he seems to have gone unnoticed.

It can work I think, if it's only for short bursts, and he spends most of his time with his peer group. The only concern is what next? Where can he go from there - so is be asking whether they have ks3 material that could be used when he continues to progress.

Ds1 is 6 and in year 1. But does group reading with year 4 and gets year 4 spellings and other literacy work. Our school has been pretty proactive with evaluation - testing his read age and so on. Though slow to act on info

it's fine. if it's just for one subject there are no issues, really. (other than a potential timetabling clash, but as school are suggesting it they've obv checked and will sort)

and knowing this now, they can make prep for y5 to borrow curriculum materials from the secondary as necessary. they should have some in-house anyway for advanced y6s, so they might not need to at this point.

He seems to be more than coping with the year 5 class change and work Grin. I would say that implies he will be fine going into year 6! Sounds like the school are on the ball.
