How to encourage dd to talk about her reading.

dd is in year 1. Is absolutely brilliant at recognising words and can spell really well too. However, is very shy and reluctant to talk about what she is reading. As a result neither me nor her teacher/ta know whether she understands what she is reading.
Has anyone else had this problem?

ooooohh yes.

try getting her to draw the main parts of the story and dictate what is happening. draw a number of boxes on a sheet of paper, she draws the story in order and dictates or writes what each picture is about. thought my dd could not remember stories until we tried this one day. she dictated the whole thing very well.

try the "what would you write if you were writing the story" to get her to prredict. it reduces the worry that they will get it wrong.
