Is this baby gifted????

Baby is 21 months old and since he was about 9 months old he could copy any tune you sung to him. He is always singing now and has taken to strumming a guitar whilst singing a tune. He also insists I strum along on a toy guitar whilst he uses the big one.

Now I have not got a musical bone in my body but his uncle was in the music business so it could be there genetically.

Interested to know if you guys think this s unusual. He doesn't show any other signs of being gifted but he does make me laugh soooo much. He is a real character.

He also can mimic a cat nosie very effectivly even though we don't have one.

i am not sure it is necessarily gifted-ness, but it does sound quite unusual in my experience!

I think the thing I am looking for is how to nurture it. DD loved to draw and that ws quite easy - give her paper and pencils and away she went.

just do what you're doing I think. let him have access to musical instruments... maybe get some other things he can easily play if you haven't already
sing with him, or play music

just don't push it. when he is old enough I expect he'll very much enjoy learning an instrument, but that isn't anything you need to worry about yet!

Completely agree with thisisyesterday. But you could find out about local music groups for tots too. He'd probably enjoy that.

I agree with trying out local pre-school singing/music groups.

my DD (15 months) has taken to playing the harmonica - is she gifted? She also stands at her sister's toy electric piano banging away at the keys and "singing" (mostly just shouting aaaaaahhhhhh) into the microphone - should I sign her up for lessons?

There's no-one musical in my family - apart from my cousins, and DP can play the first bit of Mull of Kintyre on previously mentioned electric piano...

Is the guitar strumming picking out a tune or just strumming a noise? My ds did the latter at that age and still does at 27 months on a small guitar, and sings along.

He also 'plays' his toy trumpet - just tooting along in time to a song (ie will toot the da da da of a sing) but certainly no tune. So if he is actually playing a tune then yes, I think that sounds amazing - if not then I don't think my ds is gifted so no, I guess not, but how lovely that he enjoys music so much.

The singing is the most impressive. Very like what you describe that little boy doing in the car. Will hum anything he hears. Theme tunes you name it.

Not actually playing the guitar. Just strumming and humming and shouts at me if I stop strumming the toy one he has given me. Wish he could talk more - now that would be useful!!! You would think being such a good mimic he would have more words.

Merry, honest no. I must admit when I read the post it did read like a piss take. He is my 3rd child so I have some experience and I thought it was really unusual so was curious what others thought.

I have a bee in my bonnet about people following their love/passion probably because I didn't.

I'm not sure how unusual it is, it could be due to circumstances being different from your previous child. My DS is exposed to more singing etc because of his big sister, so he's learnt it all much earlier.

I'd forget the term 'gifted' as it's arbitrary - but definitely encourage this love of music! It's brilliant for development. Lots of musical instruments and nursery rhymes :)

At 7 months my DS was playing the xylophone - not forced to, just liked the sound. He sings whenever he hears music.

Music runs in the family & I take him to a baby music group now - but seriously, if he's talented it will come out, & if he's just good at it, like me - it's just for fun. No matter what happens I won't become a pain in the neck pushy music parent like my mother!!

Is he talking yet? Sometimes that ability disappears with speech. DS1 could do it from sometime shortly after a year - would hear a song and then repeat it perfectly in tune.

My brother sang (inc in his sleep) from around 5mo... he had perfect pitch and ended up at a specialist music school at secondary age.

Just encourage him to have fun at this age, and try to expose him to lots of different types and genres of music.

He sounds delightful! Smile

DS2 only communicated in cat sounds until he was about 2. We are also without a cat. He is also very musical, but has unfortunately been heavily influenced by his father
