Advice re dictionaries wanted, please!

DS has been reading his Junior Dictionary for yonks now and it doesn't cut the mustard for his new reading books (he's in Y1 and reading Jenny Nimmo, etc, free-reader). He is pretty bright (I steer away from saying G&T!). He can understand most of the words but we do come up with a couple of doozies ('humiliate' ?!) which can be a struggle to explain sensitively (he is only just 5).

Was deliberating between the Oxford Junior, and the Oxford Primary. The latter has more 'growing room' and certainly more words, but the former can explain things a bit more simply. Plus it needs to be 'readable', in that my son will just sit there and read it for fun! The Primary is more like his vocabulary level, but the Junior seems more accessible. Help!

Any recommendations/caveats?

A friend got ds this usborne thesaurus - he's in reception and already loves to look through and ask about the pictures, and I'm enjoying it too.
