Natural contraception, rythm method?

I have just come off my contraceptive pill as I have been on it constantly since my DD was born almost 4 years ago. for the last 2 years I have been getting periods that have become lighter and lighter and now only last about 20 minutes. The doctor has said this is normal but I want a break from any hormonal contraceptive for a while.
Does anyone know how I can tell when I am ovulating so me and DH can abstain or use a barrier contraceptive. I know this method isn't 100% foolproof but we plan to have another child within the next couple of years so wouldn't be the end of the world if I got pregnant, just would rather try not to at the minute.
