I fell over (in the middle of Charing Cross Road, how embarrassing) yesterday- turned my ankle over. Swelled up quickly, and is obviously very bruised and swollen today; I am telling myself that as I can walk on it (a bit tentatively) it can't be broken - does that sound right? Am assuming I wouldn't be able to weight bear at all if a bone broken. Really trying to avoid the hours at Casualty as home alone with DS aged 3, and am desperated not to be told it's got to be plastered- going on much needed holiday in 4 weeks!! Tis swollen and a bit painful - just bruising???

Poor you I always find the more embarrassing the situation the faster you get up no matter how much damage you have done, It could be broken or damaged ligaments you really need to get it x rayed.
Re a plaster ask for a walking boot [it is like a removable plaster but means you can drive etc You know the sooner you go the sooner you can stop worrying Good Luck

osunds like bad sprain
am not a medic but a nurse and not an A&E one at that but I have sprained my ankle a few times
did your ankle bend out the way ?
less likely to be a break if so

If it's bruised and it hurts then it needs an x-ray as it's impossible to tell otherwise (we don't have telepathic x-ray vision I'm afraid to say). It's possibly broken so you should go and get it checked.

I've seen people walk in with a fractured ankle, I had one lady walk into the room with a fractured femur (she left lying on a trolley)

Thanks for your comments, still very swollen this morning so a friend is kindly driving us over to casualty for an x ray. Have managed to drive and do the school run, so still hoping it's just a sprain...... am SO looking forward to swimming in that pool on holiday. Will let you know..

Thanks Buzzy, 4 x rays confirm it's not broken, just a bad sprain. Am soooo pleased!
