this happens quite often, although not every month... have a 4-5 day period, then it stops and nothing for about 4-5 days, then fresh blood again (normally for a day, and not loads)....
is this normal? I am 45 and periods pretty regular-ish...

can anyone advise?

Any bleeding between periods should be checked out by a GP to ascertain the underlying cause.

Might be cervical erosion? Do you bleed a bit after sex? Cervical erosion is where your cervix rolls out a little bit, so that the more sensitive skin that is inside usually ends up on the outside (I think, I'm not a medical professional but I have had cervical erosion!). It's then more prone to bleeding if it gets knocked. It's treated super easy, the treatments feels and takes as long as a smear - they dab some chemical on your cervix and you're done!

But yes, as the other meerkat () says, get yourself to the GP. After a quick look they'll be able to see if your cervix is eroded, or if it's something else.
