If you are on the older style anti depressants (tricyclic like dothiepin) there are only minimal interactions. However both can make you drowsy, and that drowsyness has an additive effect. So if the ADs make you feel sleepy take care not to drive and/or use heavy machinery especially if you drink. They don't make you drunker faster, it is just an additive efect.

Frieda · 12/07/2003 21:19

I'd ask your pharmacist. I was on the old-fashioned tryciclic antidepressants, and just as hmb said, I was advised that drinking a bit would only make me a bit more drowsy (can't say I really noticed), but I'm not sure about SSRIs.

spacemonkey · 12/07/2003 21:47

i drank moderate amounts of alcohol when on SSRIs with no problems, but I know some people can react badly so probably best to ask your doc tappy

Chinchilla · 12/07/2003 21:55

I'm on Cipralex, and I have the odd one or two. All that happens is that I feel drunker quicker! Cheap date!

I would ask your doctor though if unsure.

Ghosty · 12/07/2003 22:02

I was on Cipramil and drank normally ... but on the odd occasion I got drunk I would be very emotional ....

linzoid · 12/07/2003 22:07

I drank as normal while taking prozac and was fine, no bad effects at all.

mands1 · 12/07/2003 22:37

Yes tappy . Been on prozac and drunk and know lots of others who do and are ok.
Then went on Cipralex and drunk on that ok but found I too was a cheap date only needed a few.
Then went on a old tricyclic and was strongly warned not too so cut back.
Am now back on Cipralex so the moral of the story is drink does not help.

Hope you find your peace.X X X

mands1 · 12/07/2003 22:45

Forgot to say that when I told my doc how much i was drinking she was very cross and said there was no point in her treating me as the drink, being a depressant was counteracting all the good the meds were doing. And If i did not cut back she would stop treating me.

So I did.

Drinking is a coping skill. Not a very good one
Cheers by the way

thanks for all your messages. i have been on ads for 3 months now and am feeling much better. i also havent had a drink in 10 months as i stopped smoking 10 months ago. i am going on holiday with my sister in 2 weeks. i dont drink a lot but i hoped to have a couple of drinks with my meals , it is prozac i am on.it is not worth it to have a drink if it will make me feel worse. im sure ill get nice fresh juice cocktails.

Do whatever feels right for you tappy. I was on Prozac for 3/4 years and some of those at university, so as you can probably imagine drinking occured. Though it didn't take alot to get me drunk...

Have a good holiday

easy · 14/07/2003 14:36

My dh is on fluoxitine (prozac) and drinks a couple of glasses of wine or a whiskey every evening with no ill effects.

He did get very drunk one night tho' at a party. He didn't remember anything the next day (not usual for him) and was very grumpy and difficult to deal with for 48 hours

so I suggest try a drink with your meal, probably no problem, but don't get really pi**ed, it's not worth it

doormat · 14/07/2003 15:23

Dh and I go out every weekend to our local. I have been on Prozac the last few weeks and I have had the odd drink with no ill effect.Funny though since taking them haven't wanted to go on the razz as much.

bunny2 · 17/07/2003 12:06

Tappy,I drank while one Prozac with no ill-effects at all except that alcohol is a downer and in large quantities made me feel depressed. A couple should be fine though.
