Waist size

I recently saw a dietitian and she told me that as well a weighing myself, I should use waist size as a health indicator.

The problem is that I'm unsure of where I should measure my waist. There's a 9 inch difference between the size at the narrowest point and the size round my bellybutton. One is 'safe', the other puts me in the danger zone for health risks.

Which one is correct? Where are you supposed to measure your waist?

Thanks for that. The fact that I struggled to find the bone wasn't a good start . Definitely in the danger zone unfortunately.
