Melanoma

I have developed a black raised mole only about the size of a pencil tip on my labia! Went to GP who has referred me to specialist. Too much googling is making me think this could be vulval melanoma....which is rare under 50 (I'm 42). Has anyone any experience of this? Thanks.

are you sure its a mole? Could it be like a varicose vein thing? I seemed to grow a few of these when I was expecting ds2, also veins in legs got more pronounced

Hmm - it's a black raised spot. Doesn't seem like a vein, but I'm not an expert on varicose veins.

yes mine raised black spots too, almost like a teeny blood blister.

I had vulval melanoma 15 years ago; I was 29 then.

I had the initial mole removed then had a wide excision a week later after the melanoma diagnosis.

Fortunately the wider excision captured all the melanoma cells & no further intervention, other than regular follow-up, was needed.

Of course I was petrified & it was a pretty unpleasant experience, but you just find a coping mechanism.

Hopefully the dermatology referral will be quick (they usually are) & you will have a better idea of what a professional thinks as googling is no substitute!

Hope you get reassurance soon.

Well it does seem a bit like a blood blister, so it's possible.

Thanks demolitionduo, well done for getting through it, it sounds unpleasant but I guess they do as small an excision as they can.

I'll let you know what happens, always useful if anyone comes to this thread in the future.

I had a mole taken of my face and it was a carcinoma.

Last year I had a biopsy on my vulva - it turned out to be OK.

You'll get an appointment and if they decide to remove they often do this at another appointment.

Wait to see what your dermatologist says rather than google. I hope your appointment comes through quickly.

You should be seen within two weeks of referral. Contact your GP if you have not heard anything about an appointment by this time next week.

Hope it all turns out OK.

I had one removed from there,I had always had it though but it did get bigger (midwife commented on it during labour and then I had it removed by my gynae)

Test results came back clear.

I'm having another mole checked next week as my gp thinks it's a contender for melanoma

Try not to fret (difficult I know!!)

mole1 · 29/05/2010 22:05

Thanks, I am trying not to worry about it for now... Hope all turns out ok for you too poshwellies.
