I'm now on week three of this flaming cold, GP says there's a really nasty virus doing the rounds. I've had sinusitis, bronchitis and I think my voice is permenantly damaged. Now ds has got it and sobbed to me this afternoon "I don't work properly mummy!"

Argh no! it's absolutely rotten isn't it? Now ds has got it and it's turned in to the most horrendous man flu for him. He sobbed to me this morning "Mummy I don't work properly!" Talk about drama queen!

Oh thank goodness. Not that you are all ill - but that I am not going through this alone! I am going into week 4 of this and was beginning to think something was seriously wrong.

Started with laryngitis, which turned into a cough, then a worse cough - so bad my whole side hurts (must have pulled something), then from the beginning of this week have has really bad sinus pain runny runny nose, headaches and nausea.

I wish you all better soon - it won't last forever will it?

PinkyWithABrain · 28/05/2010 22:33

Wish I hadn't seen this...I'm only on day 3! I was hoping when I wake in the morning I'll be feeling human again! It's not looking likely...

Cough cough sneeze splutter

hellymelly · 28/05/2010 22:34

everyone here seems to have it too-I am in west Wales.I have escaped so far but.....

ByTheSea · 28/05/2010 22:36

I have had this miserable thing since the volcano first erupted. Aches, pains, headaches, congestion and bad sinuses, sore throat and cough. I am soooo sick of it.

HeadFairy · 28/05/2010 22:45

The bad sinuses seem to be a recurring feature. Poor ds didn't eat anything for dinner tonight because he said his teeth were hurting. He's just woken up crying because he had a massive coughing fit.

I honestly think I've permenantly damaged my throat too, I'm so croaky I sound like I've just caned 60 fags!

Me too - bad chest, worsening asthma, told it was a virus, now gone to sinusitis (again) and on 2nd week of antibiotics. Voice came back, but cannot raise it or talk too much else it goes.

Steam with menthol is only thing helping - told by gp to do it 3 times a day.

i just have the leftover cough now but people on buses look REALLY scared if I cough still, and move away!

Some of these comments dont sound like a cold - more rhinitus and hay fever.

I suffer from non allergic rhinitus with all the symtoms mentioned above. Rhinitus leads to catarrah which is what everyone is mentioning. A cough, tickily gunky throat and bad breath is very common with it.

I hate docs keeping saying everything is a virus. My doc keep giving me anti-histamines but I told him I had vasomotor or non allergic rhinitus. Eventually I got through to him. I had some brilliant nasal sprays but recently it got so bad he gave me a short course of steroids to stop the inflamation and it worked. Nausea is also symtom of this horrible thing.

Keziahhopes I am surprised your doc gave you antibibiotics are its widely believed that they have no effect on the sinuses. Good salt solution will help.

Another help is the aqua nasual sprays "Sterimar" - you can get them from boots. Vicks Sinex Soother is great to clear the yuky congestion and Congestion relief tablets containing Phenylephrine to clear the pain and swelling feeling in nose.

I would say I inheritated it from my father and both my children suffer as well. My 4 year old has terrible night coughs which is from the post nasual drip.

Mine has got worse over the years, the last pregnancy I had pregnancy rhinitus when your tissues inside your nose swell so you can harly breath. Since then its not been good but at least I know what it is.

I don't think the aches and pains and fluey feeling, plus coughing up yellow catarrh from deep in lungs (was given antibiotics) was hay fever.

I got the impression people were feeling pretty ill with this virus as well.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 29/05/2010 09:49

I think bronchitis and rhinitis are very different tbh.

Restrainedrabbit · 29/05/2010 09:49

Yup I had this three weeks ago for 3 weeks, had sinus trouble/hacking cough/throat like cut glass/streaming nose etc. Only just shifted it now, poor DD has been going for 4 weeks

Keziahhopes · 29/05/2010 12:20

bacon - I have to have antibiotics for everything, as part of my immune system is missing (IgA) so cannot mount any defence at all. But can't say the doxycyline (sp) is working.

Treating hayfever as well here - it is a bad few weeks with lack of rain, so I am happy it rained last night!!

hellsbells4 · 29/05/2010 13:02

Thought i had hay fever for the first couple of days - but now I'm coughing up gunk, got a throat that feels like it is made of razorblades, hot and sweaty, achy limbs, streaming nose - and now I learn this could go on for weeks, thanks mn!!!

bacon · 29/05/2010 15:39

Believe me you can feel incrediably ill with chronic catharrh too - if you google it you'll see some of the forums. Rhinitis also can make you flu like. Its not a joke, rhinitus can lead to sinsus problems and other nasty conditions - once it gets a grip some people are unable to work.

I didnt release this is what I had until last year. Every time I went to the docs he kept telling me i had a virus - strange I thought this virus has been going on and off for 20 years now!!!!

HumphreyCobbler · 29/05/2010 18:30

well I don't get allergic rhinitis - not diminishing what that it like at all, but it is not likely that every single person I know has gone down with hayfever.

This bug is grim. We thought we all had swine flu at one point and they sent an emergency doctor out to the house

I am over the worst now, but am so bloody knackered I thought I might be pregnant.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 29/05/2010 18:37

bacon - I am not doubting that you can feel bad. It's just this was clearly a bug, with a sudden fluey onset, which is now clearing up.

Superfly · 29/05/2010 21:32

Bacon - I suffer with very bad hayfever every year - and this is not hayfever.

I feel very out of sorts - unwell - and have done for the past few weeks. Hayfever - yes - it's a pain but does not stop me functioning, This made me feel so bad I had to take 3 days off work this week.

The GP has confirmed it as a virus - as well as my yearly bout of hayfever which is dull in comparison to this lurgy
