A diabetic question - GTT?

I suspect that I may have gestational diabetes and am booked in for a test in 2 weeks. In the mean time, I have access to my mum`s diabetic BM kit. Could I perform a crude version of the test myself? Do I do a BM after fasting overnight, then drinka bottle of lucozade, then do a 2nd BM? I jujst wouldnt mind finding out before the 2 weeks, that is the soonest that they could fit me in. The reason i suspect I may have it is i did a random BM today and it was 9. i am 25 weeks pregnant.

You could certainly do that. Or you could just monitor your levels without the bother of fasting. The NICE target is to keep your blood sugars under 7.8/7.9 (depending on your current BMI) 1 hour after meals. If you do have GD you'd probably find it's your morning levels that are higher.

Obv. doesn't make sense to self diagnose but if you are the kind of person who can take that kind of information on board without panicking and start to make sensible dietery adjustments accordingly then I can't see that it could hurt.

There's a thread running on GD over in Pregnancy, come and see us if you need any more advice.

Basically yes, you could - but you have to take the home monitor results with a pinch of salt:they aren't as accurate as the hospital laboratory values and are influenced by things more easily. You'll also have to convince the Dr who reccomended the test of your results either way, he will probably want to do the actual test to confirm the numbers!
That being said it'll give you a good indicator so you're not in total shock if you find out you've got GD :-/

Fast overnight, test your levels, then drink a 330ml bottle of Lucozade (equal to 75g glucose)

Do nothing for one hour, then redo the finger prick

Wait for another hour then do the finger prick once more.

Above 7mmol fasting is Diabetes
Above 11 after 1-2 hours is also indicative

Y'see this annoys me. My levels were much lower than that, under 7 every time (except 7.8 on Christmas Day!) and around 3.5 fasting. My GTT came back fine. So why did they mark me down with GD and insist on induction?? I wish I had been more confident and told them to get knotted.

Sorry for hijacky rant

I did it. Fasting was 6.8 and after lucozade was 9.8

went to GP she said wait for their test, and MW also wait for their test. Have cut out sugar as a precaution in the meantime.

Rockbird those levels sound great, I dont understand it!

Thank you all for your replies.
