Any tips on soothing a mouth abscess?

I developed a mouth abscess were I have a deep filling a couple of days ago, and last night it became unbearable to the point of me sitting on the sofa at 5am sobbing. Took myself off to the dentist today, and was prescribed antibiotics and have been referred to a more experienced dentist to have the tooth taken out as the roots in this one tooth are on an angle, my normal dentist didn't want to risk them snapping when taking them out. The referral will take at least a month, unless they get cancellations.

I have already overdosed on Ibuprofen 400mg and Co-Codamol 500mg which I am having to take together, every 3-4 hours to keep the pain at a manageable level. Even with them I am in so much pain. I am sat here with ice lollies wrapped in a tea towel, stuck to my horribly swollen cheek.

Is there anything else I can do to numb it or take down some swelling? Any good oral gels? (Baby Bonjela isn't doing much at all!)

I'm presuming this is on the NHS.

I think until the antibiotics kick in there is not much more you can do.....but I would really be looking at finding someone who could sort my roots out NOW.

It is the NHS I am definitely looking into going private to get this out as soon as possible. The antibiotics might clear it up in a few days, but I don't want to risk it coming back before the 5th of July when my appointment is unless something comes up sooner, which is doubtful.

I'm not used to being in pain, so when I am, I don't cope too well at all although giving birth was no problem

How bad is it to take 2-3 more doses than recommended on the box of Ibuprofen 400mg? It says take no more than 3 in 24 hours.... I've had 5 in 15 hours Not usually one for pain relief, but I think I'd cry without it right now.

the antibiotics ought to kick in soon, and then it'll probably feel ok

i have absolutely no advice, becuase i actually don't think there is a huge deal you can do

i remember a couple of nights of absolute agony with infected teeth, it's just horrid isn't it? you have my sympathy!
