mirena coil

i had the mirena coil fitted 11days ago for the first time. It was pretty uncomfortable and I had period type pain for 2/3 days and also some bleeding. This has calmed down now but I find every time my husband and I have sex, I have a brownish discharge (sorry if TMI) for the following day or so and very slight period pain again. Has anyone else had this and do you know if its normal? The rest of the time i feel absolutely fine and have no discharge so I'm hoping its all ok...

I haven't had a mirena fitted but I am a GP and a contraception doctor when I'm not on maternity leave! The short answer is yes, it is completely normal for this to happen after a mirena is fitted. Occasionally it can be a sign of infection though. You should have a check at 6 weeks, if it's still happening then you need to tell your Dr, if before then you're getting persistent pain, pain during/after sex, temperature or offensive discharge then you need to go back sooner. USUALLY though it's not infection and it just settles down. brownish loss/ bleeding is REALLY common after a mirena is fitted. Note the MN disclaimer - if you're at all worried better safe than sorry go and see your Dr!
