Anyone had cartilage problems that didn't need surgery?

Managed to twist my knee somehow on Friday night and was in excruciating pain. A&E doctor said probably torn or damaged cartilage. Had a hospital appointment today and they said the same, and are sending me for an MRI scan. He mentioned it might need surgery if it's a bad tear.

BUT it's feeling an awful lot better since it happened, I'm still on crutches but can put some weight on the leg. It's not painful any more, just stiff and swollen. Am I being over optimistic to think it might just heal naturally? I'm desperate to get back to normality.

Has anyone had a similar experience? And if so how long until you were fully recovered?
