Zantac-any side effects?

Hi, my dd has just been put on zantac and although this helped her silent reflux, she finds it hard to get to sleep and keeps waking. Is this a side effect of Zantac?GP wasnt able to tell me any side effects as no studies have been done f0or babies on it(?!). I would really appreciate speaking to someone with experience of it. Thanks

Hi the only effect we had with Zantac was it made ds vomit even more rather than settle it down and therefore he was more restless at nite as he was feeling poorly until he brought it all up. Not much help sorry.

What else is in the suspension - some presevatives can cause wakefulness.

What form of Zantac have you been given? You might want to sift through the info from GSK here . The ranitidine we get is in alcohol, so that could have an effect on kids even without the side effects of the drug.

Ds2 has real problems getting to sleep although up until now I hadn't associated that with the ranitidine, just the reflux. Makes me wonder...

The reflux-specific forums may be of more use, there's a discussion about it here but all they seem to say is that yes, it might cause restlessness but it affects children differently.

Someone suggested that you don't really know unless you take them off the drug and see how they are without it. I'm not prepared to do that yet but you could, if you feel up to it?

Sam, shes having the syrup which tastes vile- 1ml twice a day and shes nearly 19ibs. After I posted the message she fell asleep after her bottle at 7 and only woke briefly so thats good. The parabens and sorbitol in that ingredient list would keep ds up all night swinging off the lampshades. It would also make him vomit.

Bobbybob- whats parabens?She has been quite sick which is unlike her. Dont really want to stop giving it to her though until ive seen the ped but thats 10 weeks away.

could you call them and talk it over on the phone at all or try to bring the appointment forward. As I said my ds was very sick on them.

parabens are a preservative I think - you quite often see "paraben free" on things (espscially sunscreen for some reason).

Hi Saacsmum - the whole family has flu and ds's nursery want him to leave but apart from that we are just great!

Were on the cancellation list and GP has been no help at all- doesnt seem to know muck about this. Im hoping shell settle down soon- seemed better last night and hasnt been sick for a couple of days now.

SamN- weve taken dd off zantaz- she couldnt sleep on it and seems not too bad- im taking her to my osteopath friday so that may help. Im also in the process of changing GPs- a friend recommended one near us so lets hope theyre a bit more competent. Hope alls ok with you and ds.

Hope either or both of the GP or osteopath help your dd. Ds2 has been okay for about the last 3 days i.e. it's not taking me an hour to settle him to sleep any more! Thats on a higher dose of ranitidine so I'm assuming he's not reacting to it.

We found osteopath was some help and also tried accupressure which we think made a bit of difference too. Good Luck hope you get some relief soon.

Hi Sam, glad Ds2 is bit better. Will let you know how osteo goes. Saacsmum, may try acupressure, is it similar to acupuncture? Where can you get it done?

same sort or principle as acupuncture in that it works on pressure points, but no needles just a little gizmo that is held on the specific points. in NZ there are a few practices that offer this service, would pay to ask around as I have found using word of mouth recommended ppl have been of much more benefit than those we have just sorced from the phone book if that makes sense.
