This question's probably been asked before but I couldn't find it... Got 3 kids, knackered, prob don't want any more but don't want to rule it out, just def not at the mo. What do u recommend for contraception? Hated the pill, really don't fancy an implant (bleurghh), are coils as bad as I've heard? Other options???

celibacy might be worth a shot .

oopsandbabycoconut · 13/05/2010 21:11

no sex??

lou031205 · 13/05/2010 21:16

Depends why you hated the pill, really. Depo injection is an option, but generally has same side-effects as the pill. Coils are abortifacient generally, although the Mirena coil also has a hormonal element. So they are not an option if you have religious views on that. Otherwise, lots of women find them OK. Less reliable methods are sponges, caps, condoms, etc.

Persona is a urine testing system, but only recommended if a pregnancy is not absolutely unacceptable for you. I personally found it very reliable (fell pregnant after sex on a red day, didn't fall pregnant until then. Also used it to plan conception of DDs 2&3), but the official 'failure rate' is 1 in 17.

Have you tried using herbs?

I used dong quai to bring on my period after we had 3DCs and didn't like any contraception apart from the condom and safe time of month.

Google earth clinic or get a book on herbs.

lou031205 · 14/05/2010 14:32

A sure fire way to get a 4th baby, I would say...

ppeatfruit · 14/05/2010 17:15

well lou i did not get pg.. Did you know that mistletoe is a proper contraceptive? as is yam it's nice to have an open mind.

OrganicHairbrush · 14/05/2010 18:03

In the words of my beloved RS teacher, the only failproof method is celibacy.

But failing that, that rhythm method always worked for us...

LowLevelWhinging · 14/05/2010 18:05

Herbs????

squeaver · 14/05/2010 18:06

The Mirena coil.

Gets mixed reviews on here, but I can't recommend it highly enough

Lulumaam · 14/05/2010 18:10

coil here, had it almost 5 years, very happy iwth it

Collision · 14/05/2010 18:12

Get the implant!

Have had it for 13months and although I did bleed for a while it is fine and no chance of getting PG as we use condoms too.

mosschops30 · 14/05/2010 18:13

get a coil, best thing ever, no periods, no mood swings, i loved it

bilbobobbins · 14/05/2010 21:14

Thanks guys... might have a chat with gp re coil, no periods sounds fab - oh and to oops and morethan, 3 kids has pretty much resulted in that anyway! (but was kind of wanting to change that ;))

If DH hadn't had the snip I was going to try the nuva ring, same benefits as the mirena but easily got rid of if any nasty side effects appear.

I do feel that pretty much all hormonal contraception is evil though.

Condoms are making a big comeback in married couples apparently.

BertieBotts · 15/05/2010 18:00

I wouldn't trust herbs if I really didn't want a baby. Sorry ppeatfruit, it's great it worked for you!

I really really don't want to get pregnant at the moment (as am single) and am using condoms and probably will ask GP about the nuvaring (which is a new thing in this country) if I start seeing anyone more regularly. I am so paranoid and don't trust any one method of contraception 100%! I have taken two pregnancy tests already this month despite not having unprotected sex and having a period

weegiemum · 15/05/2010 18:03

I loved my mirena

Till it fell out and I got pg.

But until then I loved it

(moral: get a coil check after a smear!)

TrillianAstra · 15/05/2010 18:06

Isn't mistletoe poison?

debka · 15/05/2010 20:18

wouldn't you notice a coil falling out of your fanjo? or am i not understanding something right?

trillianastra yes poison for BABIES

purplepeony · 16/05/2010 12:03

Herbs? You are barking.
Are you saying they actually bring on a miscarriage? that is what is implied when you said they brought on a period.
Just becasue you didn't get PG doesn't mean they work- you might not be as fertile as you think for instance.

I always suggest you think of doubling up methods- belt and braces. If you fancy the IUD then maybe use condoms as well mid month.

The pill is not that bad if you get on with it okay- recent research shows it has positive health benefits that outweight he negative, such as a much lower risk of ovarian cancer later in life- which is a plus worth having.

ppeatfruit · 17/05/2010 10:35

ALL allopathic medicine is based on herbs;e.g. fox glove is digitalis for heart disease, willow is aspirin etc. etc.

The coil can cause miscarriage which often happens naturally anyway. It's just how our bodies work sometimes, anything wrong with that?

schroeder · 17/05/2010 19:30

Another vote for Mirena here, no side effects and although it took a few months for my periods to settle; I now haven't had a period for over a year.
Herbs forsooth
