A bit embarrassing this... (or to be more technical: Strep A versus Strep B)

... two weeks ago I had a Strep A infection (NOT Strep B) "down there", for which I was prescribed penicillin, which cleared it up. Today I saw a different doctor for a different reason. When he saw about the Strep A thing, he said that should I have another baby I would need antibiotics during delivery. I had a look on the net and I'm now thinking that he confused Strep A and Strep B? Wouldn't surprise me as he's a crap doctor really. Does anybody know anything about this?

I'm pretty sure he's got them muddled up - group B strep is the one to worry about in labour.

Not really an expert on this, but though Strep B is the 'normal' problem in perinatal illness, I think any vaginal strep infection could theoretically cause problems. When DS1 was 4 days old I developed a high fever and was readmitted with what turned out to be a Strep G infection; at 11 days the baby developed a life-threatening cellulitis (soft tissue infection) that was almost certainly due to Strep G and required PICU, 2 weeks of IV antibiotics and an operation to drain the pus that eventually formed at the infection site. Fortunately DS1 is happy and healthy at nearly 7 now!
So when I was pg with DS2, I was given weekly swabs from 36 weeks and induced at 40 weeks with IV antibiotics even though all swabs were clear.
Hope not too much information, but it is best to be on the safe side - after my first experience, I really wanted those antibiotics in labour second time around.
