Has anyone taken Metformin for PCOS?

And how successful has it been in alleviating symptoms? I am seeing an endocronologist on Tuesday. I have had PCOS or about 25 years. Have one dd with help from clomid and ovarian drilling.

Am worried about developing type 2 diabetes. My weight is a real issue and has been for a number of years. Find it very difficult to lose.

Finally decided to go private as my sister said weight must be down to PCOS as I don't eat very differently to her and my other sisters but am MUCH heavier. GP seemed very uninterested.

Any stories, good or bad?

TIA

I think for some metformin isn't the panacea for weightloss that it is for others.

I am starting mine tomorrow so am unsure when I should be taking it? Morning /evening ??

If it doesn't help with the weight loss there isn't actually any point in my taking it as I am not trying to have another child and the reason to take it was to help reduce the weight to stave off type 2 diabetes for as long as possible.

ggirl - I was told to start taking it in the morning.

Hi. I'm on metformin for PCOS. I now take 6 500mg tablets a day (gynae built me up slowly to that). However, reading all your posts, none of you are on anywhere near that dose and now I'm worried he's got me on too much!!

I have been taking it for several months now and I am yet to get less hairy (facial hair) and my bald patch is still as shiny. Also no extra weight loss (I am dieting anyway). But then it doesn't always cause weight loss, that's just one of the possible side effects.

Have you been back to your doctor Hecate? Did they give any indication of when you should see any changes?

It was the gynaecologist I saw. He said about 6 months. It's been that now and nothing. Sometimes I think my chin and lip are less hairy - I have had proper man hair! black hair that is deeply and properly rooted! and a bald patch at the front of my head that you can see my scalp through! It's so noticeable that I try to arrange my hair in some sort of combover

I have another appt with him in a couple of months, so I shall have to see what he says then.

My chin was very hairy - I found that laser hair removal was very good for me. I will always have to have it but less frequently now. I also have a small bald patch at the front - I cannot have a middle parting.

Why not see if you can get an appointment with an endocronlogist - just to get a second opinion.

All the best

does it matter what time of day I take it
As I work shifts I want to avoid the shits/fart etc at work.
In others experience how long before side effects start?

dalek · 24/05/2010 18:15

I have been taking it for about 10 days now - don't feel sick but I do have a bit of a runny bum about once a day. Might be best to take it just before bed time. I have been reading some PCOS boards and some of the ladies on there take it before bed so that they don't suffer the side effects.

Also - just wanted to ask people who HAD lost weight taking metformin - how long was it before you started losing?

TIA
