Bleeding after sex.

I noticed yesterday that I was bleeding a bit after sex. It is still continuing, and although not hugely heavy, is not abating and definately not just spotting. I had a smear last year which was fine. I am 46 though. Is this menopause related do you think? I called my gynecologist this morning but he cannot see me until June, and does not think it is unduly worrying. Any advice anyone?

Could it be a cervical erosion?

If your gyn is booked up, why not talk to your GP/well woman clinic?

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along soon...

Thank you. I had thought about this. The kids have gone back to school today and I have too much time on my hands, iykwim.

Hi Pink, Hope you get some proper advice soon - i will check back later.

expatinscotland · 26/04/2010 14:02

You still need it checked out.

Could be erosion, a polyp, hard to say.

Can you not tell them you're available for cancellations in which case you might get seen sooner?

justallovertheplace · 26/04/2010 14:04

I had this and it was an erosion. It is also a sign of chlamydia though, so definately worth getting checked.

serengeti · 26/04/2010 14:05

you need to see a gp before then. it is probably nothing serious (eg polyp or erosion as mentioned here), esp if you have had a recent normal smear but please see gp soon

purplepeony · 26/04/2010 14:37

Any decent gynae would suggest/do another smear- smears are not 100% accurate and if it's a year I'd be asking for another one.

Likelihood is a polyp or an erosion- both might need treating.

Not really a sign of the menopause- any bleeding after sex needs investigating.

Im having the same thing and bleeding inbetween periods had a pelvic scan and didnt show what could be causing this and my smear test come back normal this morning also no infection or anything so Im baffled to. purplepeony: "Any decent gynae would suggest/do another smear- smears are not 100% accurate and if it's a year I'd be asking for another one."

Post coital bleeding can be caused by a few things - as you said ectropian (erosion) or a polyp for a start. Doing another smear is not indicated - its unlikely to be a cervical abnormality a year after a normal one.

The GP will investigate and refer as appropriate but OP please don't expect to have another cervical smear test as under the NHS CSP guidelines it is not indicated.

I had this and went to see an amazing gynae doctor at Kingston hospital who was fab. (I'd convinced myself I was the next Jade Goody.) It turned out to be a patch of scar tissue from the laser/LOOP treatment thingy I'd had done a few years ago.
