What's up with my eye?

Yesterday my eye was a bit sore and slightly swollen on the inside corner of my upper eyelid. This morning I've woken up and my entire upper eyelid is swollen, puffy and sore. It feels kind of bruised when I blink and is starting to feel a bit itchy. My eye itself is fine and there's no discharge. Is it likely to be conjunctivitis or something else? Praying its not conjunctivitis as dd is in nursery and I can't afford to keep her off if she get's it.

It doesn't sound like conjunctivitis to me (although I could be wrong!) Perhaps you could have a stye? Try running a facecloth under the hot tap, wring it out then hold the hot cloth to your eye for a while. If you do this periodically it might bring some relief. I get styes quite often and that's what I'm told to do. Although I don't know if it's a stye as you say your whole upper eyelid is swollen and puffy...sorry not to be more help!

It could be conjunctivitis especiallly if the white bit of your eye is red and there's any watering. If you've no discharge and the eye isn't red that's unlikely.
Otherwise it could be an acute allergic reaction particuarly if you have allergies already like hay fever.
Or it could be a stye......its a bit difficult to tell without seeing it.
The other option is that you have something stuck under your lid that's causing an inflamatory reaction.

The most likely is an acute allergic. That should be a little better by now. Cold compresses help. Its very important you don't rub the eye as it causes more histamine to be released. The only antihistamine drop you can get from the chemist is Otrivine-Antistin that may help.

If its no better by tomorrow, I'd go and get it checked out. If it does turn into conjunctivitis as long as you're good with hygiene your daughter won't get it, so don't share towels and make sure you keep washin your hands.
Hope it gets better soon

Thanks for the replies. I was in town earlier so popped into the pharmacist to ask about it. He seemed to think it might be a reaction to a bite and gave me some anti-histamine tablets. I'm wondering if it might be something stuck under there though as I can feel a small lump in the top corner of my eye. If it is, would it work itself out or should I see someone? And who? Gp or optometrist?

Lumps are often the sign of a blocked grease gland.it sounds like a mebomian cyst. Use cooled boiled water on cotton wool (as warm as you can stand ) and hold on eye lid to unblock the grease gland. clean with johnson baby shampoo diluted 1:4 with water.Go to the docs and see if they will give you some chloramphenicol eye ointment and use as directed by doc. That may clear it if you catch it early enough.

I had a mebomian cyst and it started with a tiny lump which became red and sore and got harder and harder.
